FINALLY!!! Video from our concert with D. Power, June 2005

After taking a while to get the recordings from our members, and then a further while to compile, edit, shrink down to manageable size and host online - it’s done!

Well, ok, so it’s almost done.

I’ve posted the seven sets David played solo that evening, approx. a half an hour of brilliant piping I might add. I’ve done my best to label each set as accurately as possible.

  1. Jockey to the Fair and Garry Owen
  2. An Buannan Buí (The Yellow Bittern)
  3. The Road to Lisdoonvarna and The Braes Of Busby
  4. Ur-Chnoc Chein Mhic Chainte (The Fair Hill of Killen)
  5. The Castle of Dramore (Dromore)
  6. The Fox Chase
  7. The Wise Maid and Limestone Rock

You’ll find the clips by visiting the SLPC website at:

http://www.uilleann.org and clicking on the link there.

Two further sets were added with the group playing at the concert with David:

  1. Shoals of Herring
  2. Trip to Durrow and Christmas Eve

And another three from a VERY late night with David and a few of our number at the Lilting Banshee Workshop:

  1. Harvest Home
  2. Elanord a Rún
  3. Jenny Picking Cockles and My Love is in America

Hope everyone enjoys - and THANKS AGAIN DAVID!

Wise Maid…not maid behind the bar

That’s what I was thinkin…but David called it Maid behind the bar. I’ll probably change that one anyway…

The Concert Clip 1 the first tune is called The Jockey to the Fair.

Cheers

Ferg

Clip 1: I’ve not heard this setting of The Three Sea Captains before. The second tune was The GarryOwen if I’m not completely off base.

The first tune David mentioned he learned from his instructor and did indeed call it the Three Sea Captains twice before playing it. The second tune has been correctly identified as Gary Owen.

It’s still ‘Jockey To The Fair’, from a 78 from Leo Rowsome. Three Sea Captains is a three-part jig.

Hello Guys,
We always knew ‘The Wise Maid’ as ‘The Maid Behind the Bar’ when we were growing up, also distinct from ‘Kiss the Maid Behind the Barrel’.

‘Jockey to the Fair’ and ‘The Three Sea Captains’ I’m always getting mixed up - both are set-dances in jig-time, in my mind.

I hope that helps to clear things up.

David

I’ll let you take that one up with David Jim.

I just listened to the clip - Jockey at the Fair allright!

'Tis Himself! So David - any help on the third and fourth cuts? I can’t understand a thing you said on the tapes!

Added five further clips to the page. Two more with the group playing during the concert, and three of David piping away at some ungodly hour with a few of the die hards from the club. Enjoy!

What’s with those titles? Looks like the Lord of the Dance is about to do a walk on.
Braes of Busby after Road to Lisdoonvarna. That’s “Dromore.” The Air??? is Ur-Chnoc Chein Mhic Chainte, recorded by Dave’s mentor, the great Waterford piper Tommy Kearney, on his NPU CD. I must learn that one, gorgeous tune.

David makes it look so easy. Nice playing DP! Sound like your reeds were going good even in Utah. And, thanks for the clips Brian. First one took 13 seconds to download on highspeed connection. Just wondering when DP’s DVD is coming out. Wish more pipers would put themselves on video…it’s so good to watch a piper play, and David seems to be a natural on camera.

Good Clips Brian and very nice playing.

However, the house session seemed a bit slow.
Did you just keep on playing that one song over and over?

(same clip on all three links)

Thanks for posting this Brian.
