Couldn’t help sharing this with you. My birthday is tomorrow, and I get this email:
“Hi Greg, Apologies for not sending your Bb flute by now. I got bogged down,
partly 'cause I make so few Bbs and the steps are slightly different. I now
have it finished, and will Fed ex it within the next couple of days, thanks
for being so patient.
yers Patrick O”
Thought I would de-lurk and ask what kind of wood your Bb is made of?
I got a 4 section rosewood in Bb from Pat around 1996 or so and can’t praise it enough. I have a few other flutes as well, but nothing to compare to the Olwell. Beautiful darkish rosewood and an absolutely lovely tone.
Happy birthday Greg, and congratulations on the flute. Now, if for some reason you don’t like it, you know who to sell it to, right? Wink-wink, nudge-nudge.
Oh man… drool. I want one!
Well, I’ll see Pat in a couple of weeks and maybe I’ll order one from him.
By the way, how long did it take?
Best,
Chris
P.S. - You MUST post pictures when you get the flute.
Yeah man, I’m drooling too. Glad to hear the Bb is finally on the way, only sorry I won’t be around to hear all about it when she arrives. Well, have fun with it, and Happy Birthday dude.

I thought you were offline until the move was completed Loren. Nice to see you are still around though.

The phone company pushed back my disconnect date for some reason - it’s now scheduled to be turned off tomorrow, so I ended up with a couple of extra days of on-line access. Once my phone is off though, I’ll be out of touch for quite some time I imagine. Might pop into the library to check in now and then, but other than that, I don’t expect to have any sort of regular internet access for months.
Well fellas, thanks for the encouragement. Work in China is tough these days, so we take what small pleasures we can in life.
A lot of questions:
De-Lurker: Nice to hear from you. It’s a blackwood, 4 piece. His 10th Bb. Counting your rosewood one mentioned, and Egan’s and Nugent’s…that leaves 6 others I am unaware of.
I’m 37. True obsessed, adult amateur of 5 years of flute playing. Thanks!
Hey E: Speaking to me in my new native tongue. Thanks, man.
The wait was relatively long: 18.5 months. I ordered it the day I received my blackwood D flute…which is now somewhere in Europe.
Congratulations, Greg. I would love to see a pic or two of an Olwell Bb in blackwood.
To everyone else, I thought I should finally introduce myself to this forum.
I have been lurking(reading archives for a week)until I saw this Bb massage.
I play both Irish flutes and highland pipes. Flutes for about 10 yrs. on and off. Pipes about 4.5 yrs.
I’m real glad to have found this forum. It’s giving me so much information, I’m still finding things to read and learn. I didn’t want to clog things up with old, beaten-down topics. Hence the one and only post.
Thanks for listening, I’m off to the archive.
Oh yeah, Jens! We’ll see about that, brother. I’ll be travelling to Pandrup, Denmark at some point soon…
Really?! When exactly are you going - Pandrup is the darkest part of Jutland (about as far from Copenhagen as you can get) - but I do get to Northern Jutland once in a while, next time over Christmas.
Hey folks: Anticipation in my mind is equally as interesting as receiving the flute…but this doesn’t help:
My Bb is stuck in China customs…which is always dangerous. The Fed Ex tracking comment reads: Regulatory Agency Delay. Great! Maybe they’re going to prohibit the wood source into China, unless the flute gets fumigated. Ugh! Never had problems like this before. We’ll see. DDT my Olwell?
The flute has now been stuck in China customs for a week now, and they tell me it can clear on Tuesday. Even my logistics manager–who works wonders with materials coming and going–can’t help me get it faster, since it’s personal shipment (= no need to pay duties) not commercial (=need to pay duties). China always has a way to keep one on the edge. Just the latest saga.
