I went into a hunting/fishing store the other day and spotted this case. It is a bit expensive but beautifully made and is perfect for pipes. Easily fits in airlines overhead racks. Made by the Fishpond company. Search the net and you might find it cheaper.

Looks nice. Fishing gear is kind of light weight compared to a set of pipes. I wonder if it would flex or bend with pipe-weight.
When I looked at the case it is what I would describe as semi-solid. It is not the type of case that you can stand on; sort of like the foam violin cases. It is flexible which is great for carry on. The partitions are removable. I think is is a great case for everything but shipping or going into the belly/ luggage compartment of airplanes.

If you buy one of these cases, make sure that it’s new, or at least not previously used for fishing. Otherwise you’ll no longer be able to use the expression “at least it doesn’t smell”.
My friend uses a rifle zip case for his pipes. He always gets checked and searched at the airports though.
