I just got done playing my M&E for about 30 minutes and I have noticed lately that after I play I have this strange high sensation. I generally feel really good…like I breathe easier and have a sense of well being. I wonder how much of it has to do with controlled breathing and sucking back on more oxygen than I am accustomed to. Or maybe I just get excited from the times I do get to play the flute…which is never enough to satiate, I have found.
I’m usually very happy when I play the flute.
I don’t know if it lasts a long while, but
it’s one of the nicest things to do in the
world.
It may be just me, but I am usually happier when I drink beer, play the flute, and watch Monster Garage on cable TV.
My upstairs neighbor already knows that if he knocks three times on the ceiling, I will get out my piccolo.
The way I figure it is this: I have to listen to my next door neighbor’s TV until 2 a.m., so I have a right to play my flute. ![]()
I think all music players have the same problem with the knocking neighbours
…My neighbours are also not to nice in this question.
..but don’t worry!play and play your music:)because music is the best reason to live ![]()
As I have said elsewhere, its the breathing out completely that does it.
Check out Buteyko on Google. Not that I am into Buteyko. However I used to long distance run with yoga focus on the breathing out as completely as possible.

Re the annoying, complaining neighbours, a friend of mine who is also a musician told me that he has a friend who is a pro and he used to have problems with neighbours knocking the walls when he played. Appearantly there is some sort of special permit you can get in Sweden when you are a professional musician, obviosly you need to practice, so with this permit you get to practice whenever you want in your own home, so he got one and the next day when the neighbour started knocking the walls at 1am or so he just went over to his door and stuck the permit up an inch from his face for ten secounds, then turned around, went back and started playing again. Must have felt good. I don’t know if this is completely true, sounds abit strange, but it might be. I’ll have to check it up if I ever turn pro. ![]()
Do what I do and practice your flute between 6:30 & 8:00 in the morning. That way your neighbor can’t complain that you’re keeping him up too late, and you can start your day on a flute-induced high.
hehe…with my neighbours is not to easy…when I start practise flute under 8 a.m. they also knockin…
they say that 22 p.m-8.am is “night silence”…and I can’t play in this time
but I also prefer play in the morning. This’s very good for begining of the day ![]()
The condo to one side of me has been empty for a while, so I have been playing in a corner on that side . . . the better to keep away from the neighbors on the other side, who are cranky sorts.
Much to my horror, after a particularly loud (and atrociously fumbly) practice, I went out to discover that the new owners were in residence! And I’d been honking directly into their living room wall! Aaack!
I introduced myself and asked if they had heard me. They turned out to be unsurprisingly gracious Europeans, now living up north most of the time, who will be in residence here only occasionally. The flute, they say, will absolutely not bother them in the least!
Ah, I said, but I’m just learning and it can be really awful!
“Don’t worry, dear! We think it’s just lovely! It reminds us of our granddaughter. We love her very much and we miss her! She plays the flute, also!”
Biiiiig, cheery smiles all around . . . and then . . . “She’s eight!”

Still, it’s a great Christmas present for me!
