There is a guy I know who FB suggested to me as a friend. I have never uploaded my email address books and we have no mutual friends. The only think I can think of is that HE uploaded his address book and FB found me. But I’m really curious as to how FB knew we knew each other. Anyone know how it works?
Your friend allowed FB to upload his/her address book. FB made the assumption that if your email address is in your friends address book, then you must be friends. I have a FB account, and I haven’t opened my address book to FB because I have so many non friend/customers in my address book. I really don’t want them to be quizzed by FB as to whether they want to be my FB friend.
Then there are mutual friend possibilities. For example, your friend has a person in his address book that you have never heard of. Yet that person and you both have the same mutual friend. Wouldn’t you like to be introduced? This opens up the world in terms of friend possibilities. Some of my FB friend do send me these mutual friend invitations, and I usually accept, just out of curiosity. I have made some new friends this way that I otherside would have never met. It very interesting.
You can also search for possible “friends” by name. It means you have to wade through pages of John Smiths or Mohan Patels until you find the one that might be it. Then post them a message asking if they will confirm you as a “friend”.
As Doug says, someone noticing you as a friend of a friend is likely.
I think Doug is right. If the email address you used to sign up for facebook has ever contacted anybody, and they use that email for facebook, then it will assume you know each other. It is a little invasive if you think about it.
