Ever Heard of a HUGHES & McLEOD Flute???

I am the proud owner of a HUGHES & McLEOD of Downpatrick Flute. It has a really nice voice with large holes and embouchure. I can’t tell if the flute is made of Cocas or Rosewood. The flute has been neglected (every piece has been cracked or chipped) and repaired. The rough handling and repair work make it difficult to guess the age of the flute.

Hughes & McLeod Downpatrick are well know for their pipes and reeds. But they have failed to respond to my inquiries.

 Does anyone out there have any insight?

Hello, Sillybilly.
I have asked Hughes & McLeod if they sell or have sold flutes.
They were only established in 1977 !

Andrew - I’ve seen Jordan’s flute, and it certainly looks old. Had some of the largest tone holes I’ve seen on a flute (including the LH holes).

I had heard that Jordan has some big ones. It may be a different Jordan, though.

I get the impression that dealers over the years have liked to stamp their own names on flutes bought in. It may be the case here.
Perhaps Messrs Hughes etc failed to reply to you because they were too busy looking for the old flute they had in for repair ?

I’ve seen pictures of Jordan’s, they are definately on the large side, wow! Must be honking.

I have heard from Hughes & McLeod that at one time they did make flutes but now their main business is making & selling bagpipe reeds.
