Eurovision Song Contest - 2005

Only three days left to the start of ESC, I can’t wait.

The Eurovision Song Contest use to be “the thing” in the seventies, at least around my neighborhood. I guess ABBA had something to do with that. Anyway, after quite a few boring years in the nineties ESC has now once again become something of high interest with better performers and an increased variety of songs. The addition of the Eastern European countries has really lifted this event to a new level.

My favorite this year is Moldova, one of this year’s newcomers. It is a cool song about a “grandmother banging the drum” and sounds like a mixture between Green Day and Red Hot Chili Peppers, with the addition of some ocarina playing. That is :sunglasses:

If you cant watch this live, you can always check out the videos on the net.
Ok! I know it will take over an hour to watch all songs but as you hang out here at the C&F PUB you aint got much else going on anyway, do you?

Here are the video clips:

Thanks for posting this!

Cran, I guess you and I are the only ones that like this kind of stuff.

We had a party at our house and watched the the whole thing (3h). Our own voting ended up somewhat different from the true results but that happends every year.

In short I can say that the pop-etno trend is here to stay.
About half of the 39 contestants sounded like the previous two winners (Ukraine, Turkey) a mix of euro disco beat, some local trad stuff, lots of drums and even more dance. Got a little boring after a while.
There were also some flute and whistle intros, one piper (Croatia) and way too many drums (every country now seem to have their own STOMP team).
A few countries tried to do something different and I really liked Denmark, Norway and Moldova.
Still, a fun evening with tasty food and good friends.
Ok, Sweden ended on 19:th place and we now have to go through qualifications next year. But the truth is, that the song wasn’t that good. I still can’t remember the lyrics even though I heard it about hundred times on the radio by now.

Cheers!

Are there any entries from Craggy Island this year? I thought “My Lovely Horse” was brilliant.

I did go to the website and I listened to some of the songs. I guess they are—oh what do you call them, videos of songs, not just plain songs. I don’t like pop music or whatever it is called now days. Not saying it is bad, just not my thing.

I thought I liked the one from Ukraine if that was the one with masks and black draped buildings but it didn’t seem disco—it had a big guy on a moving car and some of it was like rap music or what ever you would call it. I remember the ocarina and that was really neat—I will have to listen to that one again, I think I didn’t like other parts. But at least it was not chicklets swooning around the stage.

It was really quite interesting, but I mostly couldn’t listen to the entire songs. Maybe with friends and good food. I did actually laugh quite a bit.
