Embouchure gunk

We often speak of or write of embouchure gunk forming on the far side and keeping that area clean. Most of the messages indicate the gunk is on the outside of the hole BUT mine forms on the inside of the blow hole - the side closest to me and not on the far side. Why for is that???

Well I don’t know the answer to your why quesiton. As to what the gunk is? I don’t think I want to speculate on that. In fact I’m quite sure I don’t want to know …but I have to deal with it too. Here’s what I do. After playing for awhile I take a small vial out of my flute case. In said vial is a small fuzzy cylindar (they are pistol cleaning things) with small amount of oil on it which I smear around the embouchure area and into the hole. I wipe lightly with my cleaning cloth. This keeps the embouchure area the same color as the rest of the flute and prevents build-up of gunky residue.
