So I just received my new (old) flute- a Firth, Pond & Co. w/ an Abell hj. It has a rectangular embouchure cut, which is new to me. I play a Hudson Pratten original with the oval cut. I am curious about players who play on flutes with both kinds of cuts. Granted. I just got the Firth.Abell, and have not really had time to get used to it, but I can tell straight away that it’s going to take some getting used to before I can fully utilize the nuances of this type of embouchure cut. Just like to hear from others. Clips forthcoming!

REALLY nice sound! I see why Firth and Pond is so popular… I used to have a McGee GLP, modeled on the F&P and it was my favorite flute. I’ll get a 6-key someday (sigh)…
I’m sure you’re right. I haven’t tried the original hj yet, but when I do I’ll make a couple of clips of the same tunes for comparison. Thanks for listening.

Very nice Arbo! It is more then the funny looking head, it is you! The old American flutes can play quite nice with the original heads, as it was common to have a deep chimney on these flutes.
I will buy your CD when you cut one…

It is indeed a partially line hj. and it seems to be somewhat shaved on the outside of the embouchure hole. I am not sure how to go about making a comparison, but perhaps after playing it some more? I look forward to giving it a substantial run through next week when I have time to do so. I will try and post a few clips with the original Firth hj as well. I don’t know about comparing it to the Hudson Pratten… two entirely different beasts!
