I need some advice. Please email me if you know how to play in the key of B major on the violin. It’s an easy one, I’m sure, about finger placement, but I’m not sure how to do it.

Are you looking for just finger placement for a standard scale?
Yes. The D# and E on the D string, and the A# & B on the A string have me wondering. Take the D string. If I play D#, then an E, do I slide the first finger to the E, or do I add my second finger for the E? And if I continue up that string to f#, is that now played with the third finger? Then I have run out of fingers for the G#. Or can you pretty much do whatever is easiest for you? I did take violin as a required course in college, and I vaguely remember them saying something about sliding the finger. But on the other hand, they could have been saying you never slide that finger. That’s how well I paid attention!

Personally, I’d do what’s easiest for you.
What I would do is play D#, then E (using the next finger), and then slightly shift/adjust for F# and G#. If it’s a fast piece.
If it’s a slow piece, I’d slide my finger for D# and then for E.

Thanks, Heather. I’ll get my violin out right now and practice. Actually, I like to play along with a CD where many of the songs seem to be in B. I’ll post on Clips as soon as I can play the beast in tune. JP
