are there any pipers out there working in the field of electronics deseign ( soft and hardware) with midi experience?

Hi Dave I have no software writing experience but I use Cubase on a regular basis and a reasonably well up on the electronics side of MIDI.
The MIDI port is very similar top an RS232 port so there are lots of com’s chips that you can use to send and receive midi messages.
To send a small number of messages you can use a UART (see link below) some logic and switches.

I have done a fair bit of experimentation with midi synths and instruments. Particularly using soundfonts it’s possible to get very close to a realisitic sound for some instruments in a limited range of situations. The synth I use, VSampler, can also be tuned to a just scale for accompanying the pipes.
The challenge is reproducing the expressive ability of an instrument and I would think the pipes would be especially challenging.
The range of transient effects and tones could perhaps be reproduced to some degree and played with midi but I think it would be complex and a poor imitation. (I’m not going to spend my time on it - I’ll play the real thing!)

Yes i do, but at the moment i would just like to know peoples experiences with MIDI and pipes.

If you are looking for a midi pipe(ish) controller do a Search. It has come up before, but I don’t know if anyone actually bought the things.

This device looks interesting.
It seems to be a midi controller with its own integrated synthesizer and to use downloadable sound banks. Based on the sound file, it seems reasonably convincing.
Anyone out there tried one?
