El Topo

I finally tracked down a previewed probably only existing copy of El Topo on VHS, a Mexican western, violent Christ allegory by Alexandro Jodorowsky in the early '70s (haven’t seen it since). Anyway, there in the opening scene, mid credits, the hero whips out a soprano D whistle and plays a tune! We thought we were an ecclectic group, but apparently we are the forefront of a major movement.

El Topo, by “Jodo”? Never heard. Knew the Sacred Mountain. Thought it was his only movie.
BTW, Jodo now makes a BIG career as scenarist for comics, in France-Belgium.
Some say too big…

El Topo was his first. I thought I remembered his second movie as “Holy Mountain” Oh well, sacred, holy, blessed, samesame.

Take care.

I just attempted–nearmiss, I see–a litteral translation from the French version’s title “La montagne sacrée”.

Would you recommend El Topo (beside the whistling bit) ?
