Ebay: Payments from auction winners

This is to those of you who sell gear on ebay. This did not happen w/the chanter that was up for sale, but I thought you should know of this “saftey feature” for the buyer that paypal has put in place …if you didn’t already.

Your auction winner has the choice to purchase and put the funds on hold. The funds are not released by PayPal until the winner either leaves you pos. feedback after receiving the item, or goes to PP himself and ticks whatever box releasing the funds. If the winner doesn’t do any of that, in 21 days the funds are finally released (automatically)!!!

PP has never notified me of this new procedure and it boils my blood that after I’ve sent the auction winner the item they don’t release the funds (which IS happening to me). Over the phone a PP rep said that this new procedure is to protect the buyer, and I asked, “what about protecting the seller?” They told me that I needed a delivery confirm # to prove that the item arrived.

Anyhow, for those of you selling gear, bear in mind that this option exists for the buyer. In the future, I won’t accept these sort of bids ..especially since I have a 100% pos. feedback which has been enough of a guarantee for years that I am a legit seller/buyer.

But surely the answer there is to not release the item until the funds have been paid.
When I buy on EBay I always pay immediately with Paypal,safe in the knowledge that if there is a dispute over the item(and so far I havnae had any in over 180 transactions) that the money will be refunded.
If the person puts a hold on payment I suggest ye Email and tell them that the goods are not being released until funds clear or insert it into the conditions on your sale.
No need to throw the baby oot wi the bathwater. :wink:

are u sure the auction winner has the option to put it on hold?
is it not paypal who puts it on hold?

indeedy! the auction winner can tick “hold” or whatever the button is called…so yes, PayPal holds the funds. the point i was making is this;
for those of us who can’t afford to wait 21 (+, ?) days to get funds released…we should, as Uilliam points, include it in our terms.

i’m waiting on hold funds and as far as i can make out there is no hold or whatever button for the buyer to tick - its ebay and paypal who decide the transaction could be dodgy and so put a hold on it.
the point i was making was this: the buyer cannot put a hold on the payment

hmmmmm interesting. i ended up searching for ebay customer support tel. number (not easy to find). after getting them, I had to provide them w/a tracking #. they finally released the funds after confirming the package had indeed arrived.

Delivery Confirmation is the way to go to release funds, and the only way you can get any protection whatsoever (such as it is) with PayPal. The holds are generally on sellers with low feedback or little recent selling activity. Usually not occurring to the rest of us.
