Is the high bidder a member of the board (I’m not asking who s/he is, only if s/he is a member)?
They look a lot like hohners so I’d say that’s probably what they sound like.
They look a lot like the cheap Indian/Pakistani whistles that are also floating around Ebay. I bought one once & it has a breathy kind of clark original sound & needs about as much air. But the fear of lead solder keeps it in the drawer, I don’t think it has any but I don’t want to take the chance.
I wonder if the guy who put these whistles up for auction knew if there were people like us who’d drop a few hundred on these junky old toys… 
You know what a Hohner whistle sounds like? Wow. What’s it like, where/when did you play it? Can you record a clip?
Note to self: Let these whistles go, Hawk. You DON’T need four antique whistles. You really, really don’t. Don’t bid. Again.
NOT EVEN CLOSE! I have only one of these, a high G. It is to modern Gen high Gs as filet mignon is to a basic hot dog. If only I had the cash, they’d go a lot higher.
Every once in a LONG while, you’ll see ONE of these on ebay or elsewhere. It will not be in the basically perfect condition that these are in - and its still snapped up. To see four, at one time and in near perfect shape, is frankly amazing.
And while I respect Dale as much as anyone here, in this case, ignore him. Give the exposed lead a good coat of lacquer and they’ll be perfectly safe.
Not that I believe they’re all that dangerous in their native state, by the way. It is so very American to climb into deadly motor vehicles after imbibing alcohol or to go to bars full of carcinogenic smoke, then obsess over your lower lip occasionally touching a block of lead.

a first time bidder on ebay with one and only one transaction. Many people might ridicule this purchase as excessive, insane, foolish. I personally think it was brilliant, if as you say, these items were rare, and almost never seen in this kind of pristine condition…

It would have been nice if you had wandered into their garage sale last week and asked the owner what she would take for the 4 flutes and they might have said, .50 cents apiece. Instead, they didn’t sell at the sale so they were uploaded to ebay for the hoped for price of $11.95… BINGO!!!
eBay is a cultural, sociological tectonic plate. The surface hasn’t even been scratched yet as far as what it all means. If I knew how to do a poll, I’d like to ask the chiffilers on this board if they have 1. ever bought anything on the bay, 2. ever sold anything. 3. Neither, but often look, 4. Never even go there… (don’t understand how it works).
