I understand that Eamonn Ceannt is the earliest (known?)written reference to reedmaking for UP? I’ve been trying NPUs archive online but it seems most of the archives etc., are not available or just come out as a load of computer mumble. Sooooo, anyone know anything? I’d like to know more…
You need to have the Adobe Acrobat Reader correctly installed on your PC to be able to read the NPU archives. I have not had any problems accessing these, but because they are all basically photocopies stuck into .pdf files, they are not searchable. Maybe a project for someone’s weekend.
Dave Hegarty makes a few references to notes from Eamonn Ceannt in his reed booklet, so he might be a good one to contact regarding the source material.

PS- If you’re checking British sources, you might have to look under “Edmund Kent”
Thanks Larry, this was brought about by Daves book in the first place! I just wondered if the forums bottomless well might throw something up without me doing much work I’m not even sure if he was a reedmaker or not …
Alan,
Around the same time as the Ceannt writings, RL O’Meally wrote a few pages, actualy 6, on reed making.
These were donated to NPU by Eugene Lamb in the 80’s some time. The notes were written in 1906 or 1916, i forget which.
I’d say Terry at HQ might dig them up for you or, I’d say Eugene Lamb kept some kind of copy for himself too.
Also the are some reed making notes from Pat Ward and Thomas Ash from the very early part of the 1900’s too.
Some stuff NPU can’t put up on their website.
They have plenty of archival material that can be viewed at their premises but to copy (or put on line) any of this stuff you have to get permission from the donor, or if their dead, their family, or whoever is in charge of their estate.
Anyway, it would take a fair chunk of time and change to get all the archive material on line, but I do believe it’s on the way.
Some stuff that was printed in previous issues of An Piobaire can be downloaded to members.
Tommy
I have the old O’Meally pages, a great read too, together with some writings by Dan O’ Dowd and Tom Busby’s notes, I think these might have been published together as a whole by NPU? Came upon them much by chance in my hometown from a neighbour (who turned out to be a founder of the Incredible String Band, and he made a C chanter out of cardboard and brown paper in about 1/2 and hour, weiiiird!).
So, to find the Ward and Ash notes now…
Alan
Just read your last post Tommy, wonder if I’ve got a bootleg???
