I just use a piece of plywood with a 3/8" hole drilled in it and a 3/8" dowel glued in it. The board is large enough to be stable, and the dowel won’t mess up the wood of the flute. As a matter of fact, I’ve got a drain board made the same way that I use when I oil flutes. I wipe them down good with oil inside and out and then stand the pieces up on the stand overnight.

Well, err, umm, one flute = one dowel, unless you’re talking about the drying rack. There are five dowels on it.
