I just got a Doolin 2-piece from Bigwhistle.co.uk. Does anyone else have one of these?
The mouthpiece was rubbish, but with a new head (Feadog III) it’s a great, and very handy, whistle. Does anyone know what the tube is made of? Looks like brass, but feels very light…
I have the Doolin one piece and two piece whistles.the two piece is very lightweight brass,as far as I remember-though I could be wrong, but I’m just too lazy to dig it out just now.
I also have the ‘Clare’ two piece, which is a nice enough whistle, but they tend to lose out to my Sindt or my old Generation ‘redtop’ whenever I reach for a D whistle.
Where did you get the Clare, Kev? I’m in Herfordshire, UK and I haven’t seen them anywhere - although I’ve heard of them, of course. Is the Clare a brass job?
I got all three whistles from ‘Shannaquay’.
The Clare is a brass job with a hideously ‘luminous’(well almost luminous ) green head.
'Luminous Green Head ’ could be my next band name!
One of my favorite whistles is a Clare D. Mine is a one piece nickel which I bought in Takoma Park, MD at the House of Musical Traditions. But I chose one from about 50 that I inspected carefully to get one that I liked. They are made in County Clare, Ireland.
Amen on ditching that day-glo green head and keeping the quite decent two-piece body. Several years ago a vendor of quality whistle cases offered on C & F this same two-piece whistle for $5.00–shipping included. Who could resist?
Upon arrival, I played it once or twice and was not that happy with the sound. Since I had a number of other quite decent whistles, I had no reason to pick it up again for a long time.
Then I got some whistles from Mack Hoover, including three White Caps. It is amazing what those White Caps do for almost any whistle body. Suffice it to say that the two-piece gets played a lot now.
Does anyone remember the guy who made the fine whistle cases? I believe he was from Texas (or the Southwest?). It is posible that he included Doolins as free ‘place holders’ when he shipped the case.
