Don't trust maker too much

I have already recounted this story before but I didn’t reveal his name.

I waited for another year and sent him two emails this month.

This is his reply:

Chuck Tilbury aka Charles Arthur Tilbury who live in Texas.

He has now closed his email account and facebook.from 2021 to the present,5 years passed.

I lost approximately 2600 dollars. And all our communication has been documented through emails as proof.I have never abused him and just wanted my money back. What a rude and shamless person.

a cautionary story.Never rush to pay the maker.Otherwise, you will bear all the risks.

Last I heard Chuck was living in Austin Texas!

His website says:

Welcome to Gammon Folk Music
Tilbury Woodwinds has been sold. This web site is not yet accepting new orders while transitioning to the new ownership.
Please use the the contact page to inquire about the exciting new management and our offerings.

Probably lost in translation but in some places Gammon is perhaps considered an unfortunate choice of name

Quifan_Zhu: Sorry to hear about this unfortunate turn of events. Hope you find some means of recourse, one way or the other.

As for the change in ownership, I’m wondering if the new proprietor might be this fellow:

That’s too bad. I have dealt with him on this site when he was selling off some of his flutes (ones he bought/played, not ones he made). It was a pleasant and reasonable transaction, and he ended up including a “prototype”/one-off model of one of his whistles. It wasn’t really my thing, but it played nicely and it was well-made. So, while I otherwise didn’t know him or play his whistles, I had a generally good impression of him.

But the situation you’re describing is completely unacceptable. As others have pointed out, being a good maker doesn’t end up also making you a good businessman or a pleasant person to deal with. I’m sorry you lost what is quite a substantial sum of money with little recourse, and I hope someday he makes it right to you.

I have his address, but I can’t do anything about it.

His website had already been like this several years ago. However, all other information about him on the website remained unchanged. My friend suspect that he still have this website. He merely wanted to make people believe that the website has changed its owner.

I can’t access to this website.

I gathered as much from other responses. It’s not a place I would have cared to look at in the past.

Good luck with this hope you get some resolution.

Thank you for your reply. My friend also had a facetoface transation with him before. However, when my friend helped me inquire about this matter.Chuck didn’t reply the first email. Then he replied to the next email filled with bad words. One can’t remain kind and intergrity when he has wealthy life.

Thanks for attention.

I’d be utterly astonished if it had anything to do with Vic Gammon

It’s an awful long way from Tyneside (Hexham) to Texas for a retired lecturer (and, much much more).

Here’s a nice podcast he was on last year:

Contact the Texas Attorney General’s office. They will have you fill out a form, and include all your email evidence. I have done this when a custom yarn dyer ripped me off. I’m not sure that the AG will or can actually do anything about it, but it brings their attention to this. And Mr. Gammon will begin paying attention. I ended up getting some of my money back from the dyer because she wanted me and the AG to go away. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:
