This is the new CD from Niall Keegan.
It’s flute music but well worth a listen.
There are some amazing tunes on it played with such skill it’s breathtaking.
I’ll put up a couple of tracks on the KWL site very soon.
All the best
Phil.
Hi Phil,
Niall’s CD is indeed quite wonderful. It’s not as new as you might think. I’ve had it for probably two years now, at least (if I’m not mistaken). Niall is, I think, one of the most skilled virtuoso players from a technical perspective and uses the full range of keywork to get into some very cool jazzy arrangement. Check out the first track with Brendan Powers’ “Jig Jazz” on it for a good example. Those seeking something new, fun and innovative will really enjoy this CD, but I might warn the staunch traditionalists that this is not your grandfather’s Irish music. This is not because of the arrangement in terms of accompanyment - it’s all piano, guitar and bodhran as far as I remember - but rather because Niall plays with a real jazz flair. I highly recommend this CD to those looking for something a little bit on the edge that will make them reexamine what Irish music can sound like.
Niall Keegan is also a Professor of Flute at the University of Limerick. Check out his website at http://www.ul.ie/~iwmc/nk/ .
Check it out,
Chris
Living fairly close to Yellowstone Park as I do, I’d be inclined to buy the CD just for the title, which is remaniscent of certain warning signs at the entrance to the park. I have to wonder about whether it has anything to do with the fact that, during early fall, bull elk tend to be attracted to (and extremely angered by) high pitched, squeeling noises. ![]()
Gosh, I crack myself up. OK, I’ll go back to sleep now. On with your discussion.
