Hi all-- I keep seeing this whistler’s name (not sure of spelling)on everyone’s short list of the best alltime players, but can’t find any of his recordings. I take it they are all long out of print. If anyone has one, would you be willing to burn a CD, or even make a casette for me? I’d be glad to pay costs and shipping. Assuming copyrights have expired, etc. Thanks.
Donncha O Briain or Denis O Brien was a whistle player from the O Brien family of Dublin, piper Mick is one of his brothers. He has published a fine collection of tunes for the whistle under the title The Golden Eagle, this book was published by Comhaltas’ Clontarf branch. His recording was released in 1979 by Gael Linn, CEF 083. I did see it for sale (cassette)last year during the Willie Clancy week at the Na Piobairi Uilleann shop but haven’t seen it anywhere since.
Donncha was a lovely whistleplayer, he suffered from Muscular Dystrophy and he died as a result of the illness aged 30.
Charlie Lennon composed the tune ‘The Flying wheelchair’ in his honour (this tune is on the Kevin Crawford CD In good Company)
