There is only so many topics you can discuss on the subject of Uilleann pipes and seeing that this forum is nearly X years old it would be a very rare subject indeed that has not been discussed before.
With this in mind I think it is unfair when a member who has been on the forum for a while and has probably seen alot of repeat subjects, reply to a topic by telling the poster To "do a search "in a condescending manner that belittles the effort made by the person in posting a new topic ,especially when the person may be newer to the forum and is not aware that the topic has been discussed before !!!
Secondly I think even if a topic has been discussed before it should not put off someone asking the question again, as there is I think a social element to posting a topic in that you are inviting people to talk about something you want to talk about, you dont get interaction by doing a search
RORY
Good points Rory. Plus, after a time people may have new insight on a topic that was not discussed in the previous postings. If one only does a search, then the new insights are lost. We should welcome new or previously discussed topics with open arms.
Listen up ya wee maggot (no offence intended) have ye really got feck all else to do?Ye know full well the reason why I suggested that ye do a search ..it was after your dismissal of my reply to your question. Can ye not get yer pea brain around that ?(no offence intended).
I take it this is your" thankyou Liam post" for even bothering to think about yer request let alone do a search mesel and answer it for ye.
Its no use ye coming on now as the poor wee victim and seeking the sympathy vote…The search could well answer your query and then if ye have something fresh to add to it then go ahead and do so
Since ye raised the topic why don’t ye do a feckin search for another forum and take yersel aff to it(no offence intended)

bah why do I bother.

Jeez, you guys are surly (no offense intended). ![]()
Here’s my opinion-
Undoubtably, as it has been stated, questions will come up over and over again. This is a HUGE community!!! And people are generally running into the same problems/concerns/ideas over and over again. Sure, you can do a search to find answers, but often times (as was also stated) there’s new information, new members opinons, even advanced in technology
.
If a person feels that a topic has been discussed well in the past, they can choose to:
- provide a link to another thread
- restate their previous opinion
- Say nothing, especially not criticising people for asking questions!
I know personally that when I have a question, I’d rather get live feed back specifically to me than a list/how to from somewhere else. Thats why I ask instead of google stuff. Thats why I love it here; there are knoweledgable people with a wealth of expierence who are willign to share it with those of us who’ve not got a fecking clue!! We may not always agree, but this forum is an invaluable resourse for the newb, or the vet.
And uilliam, I DON’T have anything better to do!!!
Classes start tomorrow, and I’ve gt time to waste!
Lordo afore ye start giving oot like the wise old sage re read the thread in question carefully please…I was not critical of the question nor the idiot that posted(no offence intended) I was helping him if he but had any brain cells left to figure it oot,(no offence intended)but nooo twas he that went on the attack 1st, not I, I don’t hear any mention of that from ye…
If ye read again the above post I am saying use both search and the forum if ye have anything new to add or have a query which may not have been answered.Ye are only repeating that which has already been said..its not feckin rocket science is it. ![]()
Reference to Lordos humour deleted in not wanting to offend anyone

In deference to the moderators I am now lockin masel oot ![]()
Its all in good humor Uilliam! Lighten up a bit! People here (yerself included) are the only people I know that I can joke with and have some sort of conversations with abotu music and the lot! You know I look up to you as a player, and value your opinion! ![]()
Lordo ye might be posting in all good humour and I understand that, but the above post didna strike me as being particularly humorous more like a defence of Mackeral Mouth (no offence intended) who is more than likely sitting back and enjoying the troll experience.Anyways I will delete the reference to your wit and leave it at that…I am going back to lockoot mode ![]()

Do a *;%# ing search!!!
I think this topic has been covered as well. Did you search on the subject prior to posting this?

Dont you just love this forum .I mean where else could you spend a pleasant evening exchanging ideas about uilleann piping with Matt Groening,s inspiration for groundskeeper willie !!
Obvisously Uilliams over inflated sence of self importance has got the better of him again
This thread was not intended as some kind of follow on of another thread, but just a polite way of making the point, that topics will come up again and again and I dont think it is fair that suggestions to do a search are more often than not accompanied with remarks like ,“Oh no not this again”,or"We,ve talked about this before" thats all.
RORY
Much of the oft-repeated requests for information on this and other forums come from amateurs and beginners, as well as from the more experienced with follow-up enquiries. As such they all deserve treating with respect, and recognition of their lack of experience or depth of knowledge.
Teachers should be especially aware of this; they spend much of their time, whether paid-for or not, repeating the same old information to different new students.
If there weren’t amateurs and beginners, then there would not be much use for professionals, whether players, teachers or makers. And not much use for forums like this.
Then where would we all be?
It’s funny I basically said the same thing that rorybbellows said in a recent topic, and basically got chewed out in a familiar fashion above. As far as I’m concerned, I agree with Rory. Some people like discussing things just for the sake of interaction, and if one can’t understand that, sounds like a personal problem to me. If you feel you’ve seen a topic come up x amount of times, and it bothers you, you’re not obligated to respond if it does bother you, let somebody else who isn’t bothered by it respond. By responding I mean, offering a link to the topic at hand which disusses it clearly, or hell if you’re up to it, say what you know about it, telling someone to go do a search (first) isn’t very friendly, or welcoming. Obviously there can be other factors which may affect situations to come, but by all this I mean if you’re initial advice is to tell someone to go do a search right off the bat, that’s what I’m getting at. Things in the past, are just that, in the past, but we can all make an honest effort for the future. ![]()
I’m not saying this sort of thing happens all the time, but I have seen it happen, and not just on this forum, and you know what, I’m sure not everyone is bothered by “go do a search first” cause I’m sure there are people out there who don’t mind a bit doing just that. Which I guess makes things more complicated as far as my point goes… but nothing’s perfect in life either I guess. This topic came up again, and I felt compelled to share my thoughts again. No harm meant,
All the Best,
-Eric
Ho hum another day,I had hoped ye had had enough, and could see Rory for what he really is..transparent…to say it was not a follow on thread defies all logic and is patently untrue,so now ye can add mischief to his litany of rubbish.
To add to that the numpties who cannot read come into the fray…
If ye will go back and re read it PLEASE then ye realize that ye have been barking up the wrang tree or just plain barking…
The TIP to use the search facility came up AFTER RORY went for me.
For clarity I posted at 0844 with the answer to his question along with the link and the fact that I had posted it 4 years ago. Thus…
Life is circular as this forum is..i raised this point a while back see…(almost 4years to the week)so buck up Rory
and it started a bit of a debate shall we say… Here is the start o it…
At 10.10 Rory comes back with his riposte which was less than kindly and makes his pretence at being hurt almost laughable. So those of ye that need to reread ,and I don’t think it is that difficult to follow should do so.
The majority of ye will have understood but not so it seems Mssrs Mike and Eric…
Mike opens up with the need for respect…very moral and noteworthy,go back and read Rorys respectful reply will ya and then ye will see that the rest of your post has nothing to do wi TEACHERS or any other class of being.
The tip and it was a tip, was to enable the enquirer to get to the root of the quiry immediately and thus get an answer quickly.Simple really, it was neither dismissive nor very contentious.Experience has shewn ,and if ye look at his thread on the subject, the initial replies did not address the subject other than in jocular fashion. If Rory was serious in his quest then I expect the answers would have been of no avail to him.
So do we teach anything or learn anything frae the comical remarks bantered aboot.?
I think not a lot..
Eric is even more worrying methinks. He wrote…"By responding I mean, offering a link to the topic at hand which disusses it clearly, or hell if you’re up to it, say what you know about it, "…**which is exactly what I did.**he adds …"telling someone to go do a search (first) isn’t very friendly, or welcoming. " which isnae what I said originally. As well he knows and which makes a nonesense of his PM to me the other day …looks like ye have gone 360o frae that PM to me doesn’t it?and makes your comments in it to me redundant.
Anyways this is so fecking boring as to be inane.
I’ve had it..with this subject and Rory’s play acting and the numpties that wish to be associated wi his ilk.
My apologies and thanks to those of ye wise enough to stay oot of this wee debacle.
As far as I am concerned frae here on in ye can all use the search facilty I have said all I want to…I’m aff.

What I like best about this forum is that it is - among social and entertaining aspects - a source of knowledge. A forum in contast to a book always is up to date. You can forget about too old books about subject matter cause they do not represent the “standard of knowledge” any longer. This especially goes for piping in these years, where - compared to the `80s (for example) - huge developments have taken and are taking place. I therefore even like it if questions occur and are discussed again after some time.
Cheers,
Hans
(My two cents - “Ich habe meinen Senf dazugegeben”)
There are some very knowledgeable people who have posted to this forum in the past who no longer post here. An archive search is a good idea for this reason if no other.
Searching archives before asking questions is also a courtesy to the list.
If you ask casually, you should be prepared to get casual answers (from whomever has the time and inclination to reply). That’s not the best way to get good quality information!
A well-researched question is more likely to elicit a thoughtful response from someone who otherwise might feel too busy to reply…
regards
Bill
Aye and indeedily doo. The last great contributer who reached his fill of the “numpties” was Peter Laban, a.k.a., Simon Le Bon. Looks like Uilliam’s numptie gauge is reaching the full mark and I’m beginning to fear that he may be headed in the same direction.

While I agree with points from both sides, I would like to point out that the C&F search function doesn’t function as a regular search engine would. It’s quite possible that people ARE doing searches and rather than got through 150+ pages of hits, most of which will be irrelevant, decide that just asking is more efficient. I’ve had mixed results with doing searches here in the past. Quite often I’ve found what I need, but at the same time I’ve also found loads of irrelevant dead ends.
How about a sticky covering the best way to search and end up with meaningful topics? There may be a technique to it that is passing some folk by. I have had mixed results using the search - though mostly it has found me what I want without too much bother.
