After having a hard time with the Shaw’s low D air requierments im thinking of getting a dixon low D .
but, i just read in C&F reviews that this whistle aslo is mean for air…
what do u ‘dixon low D owners’ say? how tough is it?

The Dixon low-D has some of the lowest air requirements of any whistle I’ve owned. Literally, if any air at all passes through the fipple, you will get sound.
The Dixon Low D I have takes hardly any air at all , especially on the low D note.
My Dixon Low D needs very little air.
The lowest notes only need a slight breath.
The upper octave needs slightly more wind.
If you have trouble re breath, then the Dixon
is the low D to get.

Yup. present day Dixon low Ds take very little air. Dale’s review on the website is actually several years old, and refers to an older version of Dixons.

PS: A friend of mine recently ordered a couple of whistles from Dixon, and I threw in an order for a low C. It arrived in the country the other day, but I haven’t had time to pick it up yet… I’ll let you know once I have some initial impressions to share.
very good to hear that the review was about an older version…
but, im thinking of buying a second hand dixon, its been said to me that it was purchased less then a year,
is it surely the newer dixon?
As far as I know, there have been no major changes to the design in the past year. If the whistle you’re buying is less than a year old you should be safe. (Someone please correct me if I’m wrong! Stranger things have been known to happen
)
If it’s really a concern (or if I’m wrong), a new Dixon will only run you about $50. Well worth the price in my opinion.

my dixon low d is the first low whistle i have owned and i have tried a few others. it took me a while to master the octave jump because the air requirement is pretty low.
but now that i am comfortable with it i can’t say enough about the sound. i haven’t played a burke, but i can’t imagine a low d sounding better to my ears than my dixon. plus the holes aren’t too large and are well spaced.
