I hear different things abou the loudness of Dixon high Ds. So here’s the question:
Is your Dixon high D:
o louder than an average D
o about the same as an average D
o quieter than an average D
Thanks.

I’d say it’s about the same as your average D. I’ve done many whistle comparisons with this whistle against others and have yet to encounter a big volume difference.
The character of its sound, though, is very smooth and mellow, and this may make it “feel” less loud than other whistles.
Here’s how I’d rate the volumes of some of the whistles I own:
(Very Soft)
Oak
Acorn
(Soft)
Parkhurst
Little Black
Generations
(Moderate)
Waltons’ Brass
Dixon
Susato VSB
(Moderately Loud)
Susato
(Loud)
Sweet
(Unbelievably Shockingly Loud)
Cronnolly

I would say the Dixon is average but I think the lack of shrill makes it seem more quiet.

Is there any difference between the non-tunable, regular tunable, and tunable w/brass tuning slide?
I have the brass tuning slide model and volume is medium.
about the same as an average D
I just got my Dixon D with plastic tuning slide. It certainly seems less shrill than my (one) other whistle, but I have noticed that some of the high notes my my right ear drum buzz…
And I feel like my head is going to pop after.

I have a Bb and a low D, both of which are just enough out of tune that I won’t play them in public. So it really doesn’t matter what their volume is. But they are not nearly as loud as any of my Burkes.

Edit: I just went back and reread the initial post, which is asking only about high D’s. Oh well…so much for comprehension skills! JP
