Hey guys
Tradgirl (my sister) has the Dixon 1 pc student model for $32. Now, does the 3 pc model have brass rings on it, or the same gold sticker stripes on it? How does the sound compare to wood?
thanks,

Tradgirl (my sister) has the Dixon 1 pc student model for $32. Now, does the 3 pc model have brass rings on it, or the same gold sticker stripes on it? How does the sound compare to wood?
thanks,
The 3 pc model has brass rings. Comparing the sound of the Polymr Dixon to my Blackwood Copley it sounds completely different. I will add however, that many that hear it when on it’s own (unlike a side to side comparison) are amazed how wooden it sounds.
It has very small holes, which is fun to play sometimes, much easier to do ornaments than on my Copley.
It’s tone is more round and breathy and therefore not as expressive except for the bottom D which you can really honk out.
The Copley on the other hand has a sharper sound that you can change from being very pure and sweet to being very reedy and grity thus making it very expressive.
I have heard it takes a tighter embouchure on the 3 pc but I find the Copley requires a tighter embouchure to play how I want. I think the window (from tight to loose) on the Copley is larger and will allow you to play super loose to real tight. The window is smaller on the Dixon so you can’t play as loose as you can on the Copley. I find If I use the same tight embouchureI favor with the Copley, on the Dixon, I will lose the sound thus I have to loosen up a bit in order to play it.
Hope this is making sense.
I could have saved myself a step and just gotten the Copley but the Dixon is nice to have around when I just want to play a tune or two and not worry so much about swabbing it out and taking it apart. I play it mostly at the bus stop and when I’m stuck somewhere.

The brass rings make for a ‘classier’ looking instrument, and set the flute off nicely;i’d half expected a touch of gold paint, like my Dixon ‘f’ whistle. The tenons on this flute are corked, unlike M&E flutes for example.I too enjoy the fact that you can pick up this flute and play a bit, then leave it for a while without having to swab it out;you can leave it fully assembled on a safe surface, without it coming to any harm, which is handy if you have a busy lifestyle in which to try fitting your music making into!
