Discontinuing Copperheads

I will soon be discontinuing the Copperhead retrofit Eb/D heads that I’m currently making.
Thanks to the many positive comments I have received, I made the big commitment and bought a lathe and milling machine in order to more seriously pursue my whistle making career.
Future heads will be machined from more suitable materials that will not require the constant polishing that copper does… and my own tubes will eventually be available as well.
Copperheads will still be available per special request though… no point in completely killing off such a nice product over a little tarnish!
There’s still a bit of a learning curve to overcome for someone who has years of experience with various woodworking tools, but very little experience with precision machinist tools… and man is this stuff expensive! :astonished:
For those familiar with my head design, the new models will not be significantly different… 4-piece construction instead of the current 5-piece construction, and no reduction at the barrel end for increased strength and to allow for the possible addition of O-rings.
I will use just acetal for the heads if possible, and aluminum or an aluminum/acetal combination if the acetal heads don’t work out… but I see no reason why there should be any problem with making a 100% acetal head assembly now that I’ll have the proper tools at my disposal.
It will be interesting to find out if the selection of materials for the head assembly will have a noticable effect on the tone of the whistle… that may well be the deciding factor in choosing between acetal, aluminum, or a combination of the two.
Thanks to everyone who has offered words of encouragement… now if you’ll just please buy enough whistles from me to pay for my new tools!

Hi, Gary.

Best of luck to you, and congratulations on your new shop equipment (I’m extremely jealous).

I have been very pleased with my Copperhead. As for the copper tarnishing, I couldn’t care less. The sounds the thing. I look forward to seeing your new line. All the best.

Frank
