Hi Guys,
Im looking for other versions of Moving Cloud that i can listen to on mp3’s or CD’s.
Thnx
Mini
P.S- i dont need Matt Molloy’s version ![]()
I would recommend John Carty’s banjo version, on his album I Will If I Can.
I’d also recommend Liz Carroll’s version, which is inspirational, except I don’t think she’s ever recorded it.
first off…it ain’t a song
it’s a tune
songs have words
past that…get Bulmer & Sharpley…there are two versions in there in different and accessible keys
here are some that I listen to :Kips Bay , Into The Light
Danu,Up in The Air
Brian Taheny,Celtic Mettle.
I have trouble with the fingering on the high note in the second part any one
know how to play it? and what note is it?
You can arrange that tune to suit your style of playing, its the type of tune thats wide open for several different arrangements, but remember stay within the traditional realm, dont wander off playing junk-trad (fusion),
there is nothing more enjoyable in the music world than to sit down and play a tune the way you want it to sound, this will also help you to develope your own style of playing, Of coarse its probably easier for us composers to do this but you should give it a try.
That’s weird – I thought he had recorded it, but it didn’t come up when I did a search on my MP3s. Wonder what was up with that? At any rate, definitely not my favorite “Moving Cloud”, and definitely not my favorite Brian Taheny cut. ![]()
Edited to add: Ah, I see, the track is just called “Rakish Paddy”, but the tune that comes before R.P. is “Moving Cloud”. Funny, I love that version of “Rakish Paddy” (the tune), but Brian’s version of “Moving Cloud” just seems quietly precise rather than exciting, IMO.
Funny; we just played that after a long hiatus at a session this weekend (in G; we’re wimps). Great tune! Anyway, for a version that will most likely blow your mind (it sure does mine!), try Phil Cunningham’s live go. I found it on "The Big Squeeze: Masters of the Irish Accordion " (super accordion CD; Jackie Daly, Joe Burke, Billy McComiskey, the works). He puts it in a set with Jackson’s #2 and Jean’s Reel, and … I don’t care what anyone else says
, I think it’s brilliant.
Another friend of ours does a solo version on the tenor banjo in F and it’s terrific in that key, too.
Jimmy Noonan calls this tune “Chernobyl.”
:lol::lol::lol::lol:
When I play it, it can sound like Chernobyl too!
Wasn’t Taheney in an ensemble with Cumin, Garlic, and Garbanzo called "Hummus’?

We can only wish.
Agreed, but be warned that it is in Eb on that recording.
So I guess “fission” is OK but fusion is verboten.
where can I get a copy of Jimmy Noonan playing Chernobyl?
He’s never recorded it commercially…at least not yet!
For a lovely uileann pipe (with piano) version of the moving cloud - check out the CD " Tiomnacht: ‘Handed On’ " by Eoin O Riabhaigh (Gael Linn Records)

There’s a list of recordings here. If you want an unusual version, I’d recommend James Kelly, Paddy O’Brien & Daithi Sproule - a Donegal version, I believe.
