I just got out my copy to remind me of what is on it. All of Gaughan’s CDs are thoroughly worthwhile but this one joins Handful of Earth, his self-titled album and Redwood Cathedral as perhaps his best. If I played them all again I’d probably offer a different opinion.
I noticed that this is the one with Dowie Dens o Yarrow. I’ve been lately enjoying a stunning version of this song by Shelagh McDonald, a fine but long forgotten Scottish singer who made two albums in the early 70s and then disappeared off the face of the earth. If you see the reissue CD of her work it’s well worth checking out—she occupies a space somewhere between Sandy Denny and Joni Mitchell and is accompanied by some of the best including Richard Thompson.
I like all his albums but my favourites are Handful of Earth and Sail On. He’s fantastic live too though he tunes between songs obsessively!

I think it was voted “album of the decade” by Folk Roots for the 1980s.
