Detox Diets Debunked

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4616603.stm

So if you’ve been on a detox diet of late, well, p’raps it’s time to get re-toxed?

My personal diet is based on the fact that alcohol is a preservative. I’m doing my best to make sure I take enough in to preserve my entire body.

or as Tom (my DH) says:

Beer is Food.
(he also likes to say “It’s 5 o’clock somewhere”).

Missy

I’ll drink to that.

Slan,
D.

What is DH, and does Tom know you call him that? (just in case it’s bad).

Dear Husband/Hubby.

He’ll be cool with that I should imagine.

Slan,
D.

It seems that so often these “detox” efforts are related to getting back to a “natural” state, and nothing seems more unnatural to me than what some people do to achieve this state.

I keep wondering what makes people feel the need to do this. The article said it’s been going on for thousands of years. Is it a feeling of guilt and wanting to be “clean”? Is it a punishment of the flesh? A feeling that things are not going well and they would go better if you were “clean”? A wanting to start over again? A self-treatment for depression?

fly - duhblinn’s correct - Dear Husband…

I save the “bad” stuff to call the ex!

Missy

And here I thought DH was dunder head - I guess I better apologize to the little woman…

For me it depends on my mood. It can mean “Dear Husband” or it can mean “Darn Husband”, “Dorky Husband”, “Dingbat Husband”, “Delusional Husband” or whatever I decide the “D” part to mean at that particular moment. And yes, he knows that I call him these things, and he’s cool with it

I have known some people who have made themsleves really sick on detox diets, and one guy who did so many things (diet, exercise, lifestyle, etc.) all at once that he had a stroke. While he was on it, however, he was literally sweating a black tarry substance as his body was cleaning itself out. I have read several articles about what scientists are calling our “body burden”, i.e. the chemical load we have accumulated from living in the modern world. When people hear these types of stories, I wonder if some of them have their natural aversion to being dirty kicked into “hysteria” mode, and if perhaps this is what drives them to detox diets, etc.

Well, I must say that the idea that I could sweat a “black, tarry substance” is rather alarming. :astonished: I guess my response is to pretend I never heard about that and let the black tar stay wherever it is. I suppose if people actually feel dirty inside that would be quite a powerful motivation. That must be a really awful feeling.

I’ve looked like that. But I was just really dirty and sweaty.

Isn’t there a diet like that which some cancer patients eat? I forgot exactly what it’s called, but it involves eliminating all foods except for one out of a person’s diet.

Whenever someone says, “…cool with that…” I think it should be “…cool wiv dat…” or “…down wiv dat…”

I’m down wiv dat, dawg.

I’ve heard those colon purges are great for detox. Anyone try it yet?

No, but Tom has had to have several “photo opportunities” due to having a history of colon cancer in his family (his mom died before age 60) and he’s had several pre-cancerous areas taken off. He even has tattoos in there! (I know - TMI!!!)

He’s a pain to be around the day before these procedures!!!

Missy

I don’t reckon it’s a barrel of laughs the next day either…

Nah - he’s drugged out enough he just comes home and sleeps!

My dad also died of colon cancer, so I’m very insistant that he gets these things done. In my dad’s case, it was probably more circumstantial than heredity based, so I have a few years yet to have to go through this.
