I just acquired a used Delrin flute in fine shape except for a few serious scuffs. I know I should ignore them as they won’t interfere with playing but is there any way I could polish it so it looks a bit better?
I prefer a matt finish on Delrin flutes for improved traction (also looks more like blackwood IMHO ). I would hit it with a Scotchbright pad (longitudinal strokes ), but YMMV.
Some prefer the matte finish some like a glossy shine on the delrin. I happen to like the smooth shine. Others have commented that delrin feels slippery when highly polished. I buff scratches out of delrin using a bench mounted buffing machine, similar to a low speed grinder with long arbors on either side. You can use jeweler’s rouge and other polishing compounds to get to a high gloss. Be careful and go slowly at first to avoid heating the plastic too much. Actually any light automotive polishing compound should work too.
