Dang. Why did he wait? Paul Newman could have played him in the movie if only he’d been forthcoming at the time.
Ah! The man that brought down the man that pulled the United States out of Vietnam!
I wonder if he could swallow a banana?
CNN.com is posing a question on their website: Did W. Mark Felt (Deep Throat) change history or will he be just a footnote in history?
Woodward and Bernstein say they used him to confirm stories, but I wonder how far they’d have gotten without him. I’d say he changed history.
Isn’t it satisfying to have one of life’s little mysteries cleared up? ![]()
Susan
Woodward and Bernstein swore they wouldn’t name or confirm Deep Throat’s identity until after his death. As far as I know, neither has confirmed that Felt was DT, so really, anyone could claim to be DT, but it has to be confirmed by them.
djm
They’ve confirmed it, djm. See the Washington Post site or the new CNN.com update.
"In a statement today, Woodward and Bernstein said, “W. Mark Felt was ‘Deep Throat’ and helped us immeasurably in our Watergate coverage. However, as the record shows, many other sources and officials assisted us and other reporters for the hundreds of stories that were written in The Washington Post about Watergate.”
Woodward is writing an article for Thursday’s Post about how Felt helped them.

Oops! Sorry, I haven’t seen the news since noon. ![]()

You know I’m young so I don’t get what you hippies or whatever you were had against Nixon. Personally, I feel he was the greatest President we’ve had in the last 50 years. He did more for education, the working man, the underprivelaged, the environment, foriegn relations, he ended the nuclear buildup and started the colapse of the soviet union (even though R#$gan gets all the credit). People loved Clinton but face facts, he was a white nonunionist cracker who hardly lifted a finger for the environment or his fellow human beings. Nixon was the best, too bad he was a freaking wierdo and had to rig an election that he was going to win anyways.
Frankly, I wished that deep throat dude would have kept his big ass mouth shut!
After watching the news tonight, including film clips of Mark Felt from the 70s, I realized something - just a little personal memory:
When I worked for the administrative division of the FBI in 1971-72 (before transferring to the San Diego field office), there was a period of time when our offices became quite crowded and they moved my desk and that of another girl into one of the large hallways in the justice building. Although I knew some administrative agents (usually older guys who were through with their time in the field), I only remember one quite vividly. While sitting in the hallway at my desk, once in a while a really striking looking agent would walk by and nod his head at us. I don’t recall his face precisely, but he had a lot of blond/white hair and wore glasses and designer or tailored suits (something the average agent wouldn’t have been able to afford).
After watching the news tonight, I’m convinced the agent was W. Mark Felt. Who knew?

Jack, those were the days when reporters occasionally actually sought for the truth and, when they were found out, sometimes the guys responsible actually admitted to and paid for their mistakes. I respect Nixon for resigning. It happened on his watch and he was actively involved. It wouldn’t happen today.
Susan
Yes, but aside from punishing the guilty, was it worth it? Think of the good he could have done with more time in office. I wish he was in the office right now…
Aside from punishing the guilty? So Presidents should be able to lie without any consequences? - “we’ll leave him in office because other than this break-in/cover-up/pressuring of the FBI/lying he’s done a good job.” I don’t think so.
Susan
Man it really must suck to be called Deep Throat. No pun intended.
I guess you just had to have been there… ![]()
You just had to be there to understand.
MurphyStout, just a bit more on the great Richard Nixon----
Richard Nixon was a vigorous member of the House Committee on Un-American Activities, a committee which caused a great deal of suffering in this country and actually ruined lives.

No, I do not wish he was president. I had no liking whatsoever for Clinton but I would hope we would strive to do better than any of these.
Actually, his ilk was considered normal. It was the people who didn’t like him who were the
freaking wierdo[s]
----that’s what the esteemed Spiro Agnew, his Vice President, thought anyway. He had to resign too you know. For taking bribes in Maryland. ![]()
Even though I’m young and dumb, has there been a better President since FDR than Nixon?
So if a guy admits to his crimes he’s bad, but Bush can lie right and left and hide the truth but because he doesn’t admit to anything, he gets to stay in office. Is that right?
You baby boomers are weird. Vietnam is bad but blowing up arabs for cheaper oil is good. What’s worse, you guys created my generation and what a sorry lot we are.
I can only speak for the tail end of the Baby Boom ('61), but I won’t argue with that.
What???Stout!! I can’t believe you’d say a thing like that! ()jk…none of the boomers I know well, nor the Xers for that matter, are in that camp.
Murphy, I am not your mama and I will not clean up your messes. But I have a ShopVac which my dog bites every time it rolls, and you can have it for cheap. I guess I’ll keep the hound though.
Jack, there weren’t just lies. There are quite a few men who went to prison for their involvement in Watergate. It happened on Nixon’s watch and he was actively involved in the coverup - he should have resigned. You don’t get to be involved in this kind of crap and have it forgiven because of other good you do. Nixon answered for his lies - will Bush ever have to answer for his? Only time will tell.
As far as my generation leaving yours in a pile of crap - every generation since time began has had to deal with the garbage from previous generations. We may have added a lot of problems to the world, but we didn’t invent trouble and bad times, so you don’t get to blame it all on us.

You mean it wasn’t Linda Lovelace! Darn!
