Dead reeds...

In my quest to develop a greater knowledge of the different styles of reeds to better make them for a variety of chanters out there, I would like to solicit from the contributors of this forum your dead reeds… the ones that don’t work any longer due to splitting, old age or other.

I wish to take these reeds apart, study their measurements, their manufacture, scrape and staple design. Please PM me if you would care to donate to my ongoing education, I’d appreciate it immensely. Who knows, someday I could return the favor… once I get your breed of reed down.

Thanks a bunch!

… to date, 66 views, and not one reply… not even an attack…

…yooos guys/gals are slipping…

I have an never used reed from the famous pipe making country of Pakistan. You are welcome to it. That is if i can find it, and more unlikely if you really want it. You could take it apart and do the opposite of what ever they did.

I can safely say it is really dead.

Thank you for your support… honestly… you do my heart a huge friggin’ favor.

Look, if nobody wants to take this request seriously, then please do not reply to either me or my post…

… actually, why not forget this post all-together… it never happened… in fact, I’ll give it another 24 hours, if after that I do not get a serious reply, I will ignore any PM or further posting.

Robert, thanks for the response.

i think that you have a great idea here. casey burns had a similar request some years back in the ipc journal. i wonder how he made out? in any case your request should be taken seriously. good luck. check your pm please. o

I may have accidentally deleted it… if so, could you please re-send the PM?

I am at a place in reed making where I can ‘service’ a few chanter types. But, I hunger for more knowledge, and, I have always been of the opinion that what I can learn, I can give back to the Uilleann Piping community… and I cannot think of a better way to start than to be able to reed any and all chanters that come my way…

… and Robert, sorry for the rush of anger on my behalf, but truth be known… I have more than my share of knowledge and experience in how to make ‘dem dare plastic whatsit-hooozitz’ reeds work.

I’d love to get in on this Joe, but I only have 2 reeds from Tim B. and even though one is glued back together, both still work well. Besides, you should still have one of these, I would think. I am waiting on a new chanter though and if I screw up the reed in a few months, I will gladly submit it to you (after measuring it thoroughly, of course). I think it’s a wonderful idea and I wish you luck.

What make of chanter are you currently playing?

Joe,

I’ve a Thompson reed that split on me a few years back. I didn’t chuck it as I hope to be able to copy it one of these years.

If you want, I’ll send it to you. You can copy it, take measurements, etc. Keep it as long as you need it, but when you’re finished, I’d like it back. As I said, one of these years, I’ll get around to making a copy.

If that sounds good to you, PM me your home address and I’ll pop the reed in the post over the next few days.

Joseph;
Give it a bit longer, I know I am just getting around to checking the forum Monday morning. And I’ll admit, my initial thought was "Cool, I can send him a dead Tim Britton reed, its just been lying around . . . "

and then my second thought was [Monty Python voice] “Its not dead yet!” I can rebuild it, make it better, I have the technology . . .

I suspect a lot of pipers who dabble in reed-making are hanging on to their dead reeds for the same reason you want them; reverse engineering, or hoping to eventually acquire the skills to repair them, or etc.
Well, having replied, I will offer up a TB reed for post-mortem, if you need an example. Send me your snail mail address.

[Bickle] You talkin’ to me? [/Bickle] if so, its that Brittonized Pakistani chanter.

May I just take this opportunity to say that this is the first time I have posted to this thread?

Thx,

djm

Well… are you going to be serious, or do I have to get “all-up-in-your-face” snippitty? Hmmmm? :stuck_out_tongue:

If you only have two, and they both work, please hang onto them… you have a bigger need for them than I.

Well, that is I have 2 from Tim and some less pleasing attempts of my own…I can’t see any reason you’d want those.

When the reed is dead can you not re-use the staple ?

RORY

You can.

PD.

You can.

PD.

That’s the beauty of the reeds that we use, one can recycle their staples. Look, I am asking for your help in my understanding the variety of reed building styles… I am not trying to trick anyone into giving me a bunch of freebies… I make my own reeds for my chanters. This request of mine is on the ‘up and up’, really.

If you are concerned about my motives, please feel free to email or PM me… or simply disregard my request. If you are concerned about ‘what’s in it for you’, I think the answer is obvious… but again, contact me off forum or by PM and discuss it with me… I’m quite approachable, and I am usually pretty quick to respond.

Thanks.
