has anyone ever played or owned a de Keyzer flute. Or no any thing about them, i was offered a trade for my serry.
I’ve not played a DeKuyser, but I’ve heard clips of them and they sound great. Then again, my Seery gets better the longer I play, and I’m pretty darned convinced it’s not just a good polymer flute but simply a good flute, period. I wonder why they want to trade the DeKuyser for your Seery?
Eric
I think you’re better off with your Seery.

Ask if you can try the DeKeyser out for a while before deciding. It is more pricey, if your Seery is a regular keyless Delrin, so it might be a good deal anyway.
Here is a link to a post I made ages ago. The De Keyser flute was owned by a guy named Neil Grady from ??? in County Mayo. He was an instructor at the Goderich Celtic Roots festival in Ontario Canada a few years back and made his way east to Newfoundland before heading back to Ireland.
His De Keyser flute had a great tone and was quite forgiving to play. After playing his I would have ordered one myself but I had a new flute on the way already. If all of De Keyser’s flutes sound like Neil’s they’re quite nice instruments… of course I’ve only ever played the one.

the fella deals in flutes and has a music shop in belfast, the keyser is on sale for 300 sterling and he has a second hand serry, that in my opinion was not looked after very well, the tones not great, its on sale for 250 sterling.
i played a quick tune on the keyser and it sounded well, a lovely tone! but unfortunately i didnt have my serry with me to compare.
he said he would consider a trade if my serry was in good condition and im confident its in excellent playing mode…it has ben cared for like a wee egg!!
Im quite attached to my wee serry but id love a change, there is a great strong note from the keyser, i just dont know  ![]()
Hey, Ursula!
I liked mine quite well – nice big loud flute. Super bottom D. Just make sure you oil it well and play it in gently; I’m not sure how seasoned a deKeyser’s wood is compared to some other more expensive ones.
(And being as I put a big old crack in mine BECAUSE I didn’t know how to care for it … ah well, it still plays decently, especially now that I’ve wrapped the attractive royal blue electrical tape around its barrel!)
I recall John Skelton mentioning that he’s come across several belonging to other students in the last year or so and remarking how impressed he’s been with them for the price.
That said, I paid $350 (about 250 sterling then?) USD for mine new 10 years ago. So you might want to doublecheck the price against some other comparable flutes in your area; after all, weren’t new Murrays going for only 450 sterling? Then again, that’s half again as much … ![]()
Aw, heck. Whatever you decide it’ll work out. Good luck, and most important, have fun!
cat.
Hiya Ursula,
Is the shop Marcus Music by any chance? They seem to try to unload De Keyser flutes onto any prospective flute buyer. I know a few people who have bought De Keyser flutes from there and other stores in Ireland and they are quite content with them. The one I played recently was astoundingly rubbish and would have to say Seery all the way. Or wait to see what else becomes available on the used market. Marcus usually have a few good used flutes such as Martin Doyle in stock.
David
I have a problem with my Seery, which is the
top is flat unless it’s quite warm.
Anybody else?
People I know who play De Keyser flutes like them very much.
I have never cared for the feel of plastic flutes.
Jim - Have you tried moving the cork in a bit towards the embouchure? My Seery is dead on up high.
Eric
Thanks!
I’m surprised you didn’t think of that yourself Jim.
Well, I’ve never touched a cork on any of my flutes, personally.
M
Good girl.
Chickens! Everyone’s doing it…go ahead move that cork!
Here’s a link to a catalogue with a bit of info on de Keyser
They had a De Kuyser at Lark in Seattle last time I was there. I enjoyed testing it out. Overall a good flute. The only qualm I had was that it was a bit unfinished in appearance but that could have been due to neglect while sitting in the case in the shop.
Cheers,
Aaron
thanks for all the advise! I went and had another tune from the de keyser and iv kind of went off the notion, i dont think its any better than my serry, i defenately would not want to part with my serry for the de keyser. The de keyser was valued at 300 sterling, so im going to hold out and invest in a Murray flute something similar when i have a bit more spare cash.
all the best
I’d be afraid to touch a cork. I figure their owners know where they’re supposed to go and know enough to put them there.
This cork-touching business must be a guy thing.
