I live just south of Daytona, in New Smyrna Beach. I’m a professional musician (percussionist) but Irish flute and penny whistle are my main hobbies. (I play a little bodhran too). I’m pretty familiar with the area in question - I’ve played at the Ocean Center on several occasions.
There’s not much of a trad scene or folk scene in Daytona that I know of. Orlando, 60 miles away, has a few sessions at a couple of different pubs.
The best part of Daytona is the beach, literally, the sand and the water - everything else is touristy/rip-off/sleazy joints with plenty of belligerent panhandlers skulking around to round out the picture.
Check out the lighthouse and the inlet area on route A1A south - it’s a picturesque part of Florida worth a look. There are some decent restaurants down that way too. Contact me (nolindrums"at"hotmail.com) and I’ll be happy to fill you in.
I’ll be playing music theater shows in June, July and most of August in Daytona, but I’m pretty much free during the day. Drop me an email –
