I have a student using a Daye practice set. There is just the one valve (bellows) with this set. Is that normal?
I don’t think so. This photo http://www.daye1.com/pennychanter.html from Daye’s website clearly shows a blow check valve.

If the student did a home build from a Daye kit and didn’t buy the finished product from David, then they likely neglected to put in the appropriate blowpipe valve.
I can’t imagine being able to play the set without a blowpipe valve. You’d have to keep the bellows from being pushed back out.

Former Daye practice set owner here. Yes, the set is supposed to have the usual valve setup. Bellows valve, bag valve.
This was close to ten years ago (Man, was it really ten years ago??) but I’d make a rather confident assumption that the design wouldn’t have been changed to a one-valve system since then.

Ha-ha! Turns out there’s a valve already in place: but someone had assembled the tube and fittings with the valve pointing inward/upstream toward the bellows!
