Davy Spillane's whistles?

I know it’s pointless, but once again I’m going to point to this thread from late 2001.

Davy offered both the Overton/Chieftain style of whistle and the Kerry/Howard style over two years ago… although his prices are high enough to deter even the most hardcore whistle collector! :boggle:

Dale,

Thanks for your concern’s and im sure that all here at “CHIFF” appreciate it as well. It takes an aweful lot I’d amagine to keep things running smoothly here on the board. The Low Whistle will come out very soon. I hope that you all take a real liking to it!!

P.S. Don’t worry I will not apologize for Davy in any way. The truth is Davy does not mind me discussing his whistle. I’d be worried if I posted a picture of him playing his Low Whistle which I also Have in my possession then I’d be a little worried. Davy could really care less if I talked about it here on the forum. I am happy Dale that you can see that I am not making this all up about the whistle coming out soon. Actually, I saw this post for a few days and wanted to avoid it but I felt that it would be a real injustice to have folks believing anything they wanted. So I decided to come in nicely. Im happy that I did. If people have something to say regarding this Topic hopefully they can be good comments.-Thanks, Tal

Tal, are you referring to the picture of Davy on the Chiff & Fipple website and in the newsletter that went out today? If so, do you think I should be worried?

Hi Dale,

Not at all. I was really referring to myself saying that I have pictures of Davy playing his Low Whistle’s. I can discuss things openly but I would not post any pictures out of respect for him. I’d be glad to perhaps post a picture here of me & Davy in Ireland. That would be cool! But no low whistle pictures of him playing. He’s a very private person. Especially, regarding music and I can understand that. Many people like Davy need to keep things on a profession level whatever that means to that certain individual.

P.S. I really do not get the news letter Dale so I probably would not see the picture you are referring to.On the other hand, I’d love to see it. I just never subscribed in the past, that’s all.

P.S. I would not be worried if I were you using a picture of your choosing whether it’s your web-pg. or the news letter!

This thread is almost as much fun as the politics one. Damn, I should have saved that “smoke-and-mirrors” phrase for here…

Dale copied a portion of the main C&F site, without editing. This explains why he says “and this time it gets ugly”. This made sense in the original context where that material was, but doesn’t really make sense in the newsletter.

I still don’t get how an individual can intentionally become an internationally renowned Irish musician, have single-handedly shown more of the world population waht a low whistle and uilleann pipes are and how they sound, can have recorded no fewer than 9 solo albums, several tutors and countless guest apperances on other artists recordings and still not want to be famous or be seen in public view.

Bad career choice?? Did he just not “expect” that fame or perhaps infamy would result from all of it?

hmm…maybe he’s got vitiligo and his nose is an icecube tray…whoops, wrong celeb…

Still want to know, masochism or sadism?

You’re right. I fixed it on the web. I need a good editor.

Dale

A Month or so ago I got to play with Mr. Spillane for a couple hours and talked with him quite a bit as well. He did mention this whistle design and that the final work was being done on the production methods for the heads. Similar to a howard but with an aluminium body. He was pretty excited about it. Talbert knows what he is talking about on this one.

P.S. there was a thread on it called “I get to play with Davey Spillane” or something similar.

Bravo Mark! Good for you.- Talbert St.Claire

P.S. The Low Whistle is really a beauty! I’ll be using it on a few selected tracks for my upcoming cd, “Harvest Moon”. Best, Tal

P.S. I asked him about you Mark. Guess what? He actually did remember you and said that, “You were a pleasant guy to chat with!” He was only in your neck of the woods I believe for only a weekend. He spotted you in the audience with your whistle as it was a fairly small size group of people. Mostly, beginners he mentioned. Glad that you had a good time!

Mark, I remember that thread and I recall that, in advance, we did a lot of what I took to be good natured goofing around concerning whether Davy’s whistles were really Overtons and how to find out. Then, if my memory serves me well, you found that he played his own whistles and an Overton which simply is what it seems and he wasn’t pretending anything different. Wasn’t that correct? If so, apart from our actually getting hold of one, is there really any mystery? If it doesn’t sound like a Howard, it certainly won’t be a Howard in disguise, just in case somebody wants to take that route.

Just supposing you buy a Howard to keep its mouthpiece, a Kerry to keep the tube, you’ll end up with the most expensive plastic-headed whistle. You may reduce your costs and sell the Kerry head on Howard tube on eBay, calling it the Democrat Ticket Low Whistle. Still, it’s nonsense, since it won’t have the Master’s signature or True sticker.

Now, Doest Doktor Spilleinstein maketh a Frankenwhistle?

Here’s a clue: this web photograph of His cousin and assistant (Igor Spillane) the one who mixed up bodies and heads in the whistles graveyard.

Pronounced Eye-gore, of course.

No problem,

It was an interesting gathering. The group I play with is a loose group of folk musicians who play for the local contra dance. We play mostly old time and bluegrass tunes with a bit of ITM. There was a lot of “So, do you know such and such a tune?” from Davey followed up with pondering, playing a few bars and realising that it wasn’t the same tune etc. We did find a few tunes in common. I wouldn’t call any one there beginners since they’ve been playing for over 20+ years at least (including me) just not 20 years of ITM, but I could certainly see how he would have got that impression. No big deal, fun was had by all.

Wombat’s right, no real mystery. He does make his own, he is coming out with a plastic headed aluminum bodied whistle that for the first run will have hand made tubes, he does occasionally play an Overton like he was that day.

Source of my favorite setup and punchline:

converstation in graveyard while digging up a corpse at midnight for Dr. Frankenstein’s experiments …

“This is the most miserable thing I’ve ever been through.” (or some such)

(gleefully) “Could be WORSE!”

“HOW could it be worse?”

(more gleefully) “Could be RAINING!” (sudden thunder, lightening and downpour)

Best wishes,
Jerry

Worse? There can be worse. They (or He? :really: ) destroyed to the link the picture.
The good thing about being paranoid is I had a back-up! WHOOHAHHAHAHA!

Here: Eye-Gore “Glaukome-Spill” Spillane with the purtytype of the Whistle To Rule Them All
(thanks to Glauber, my online spillane checker)

Is that hole just under the right cheekbone there especially for whistles or does this model have a design fault?

Only those who can walk this way, (NO, this way,) are qualified to play this whistle.

“There, there whistle…there flute.”

“Why are you talking that way?”
