Dave Williams memorial weekend

The 2nd annual Dave Williams memorial weekend will take place on the 27th - 29th of october.

Further details are avalible from the website:

We’d like to go, but can’t risk the pipes, flute and fiddle going into the hold on the return journey from Stansted to Sweden, bummer as they tend to say. Hope you all have a good time

I can’t go either, but I sure hope more of those interesting video clips emerge as they did from last year’s weekend.

Hope to make it this year.

The flying in/out of the UK with pipes thing is certainly a right pain, many of my Floating Tionol punters come from abroad, and their piping isn’t so bad as to detain them for 28 days without charge! Though maybe some of Brian Howard’s jokes would merit it.

The musicans union is rightly kicking up a fuss, as many professionals are having to cancel gigs and tours. Would you check a strad?

“The musicans union is rightly kicking up a fuss, as many professionals are having to cancel gigs and tours. Would you check a strad?” Busker Sean.

Aye, no problem, it’s just an old fiddle  - but not my Williams or Wilkes. Besides getting broken they could also get stolen. I suppose buying a seat for the pipes or flute wouldn’t help, they’d still be considered dangerous. A flute player from Stockholm was recently in London and he solved the problem by taking his delrin flute and letting that go inside his check in suitcase.

any more information available?

still going ahead? website doesn’t seem to have been updated to include this year’s schedule

Pity the information has come very late. Some people , like me, have to get information on time. At least two months before. Pity again…
Hopefully next time.

Receintly recieved an update from Sam who is organising the event this year..

"The weekend is going ahead on the 27th - 29th October. There will be no concert this year but there will be a series of workshops in pipes, reed making and several other instruments (fiddle, button accordion) on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and sessions in the Herschel Arms throughout the weekend.

A am still awaiting final confirmation of who will be giving workshops and will forward this as soon as it is confirmed.

Confimed so far: Alan Burton (reed making), Marcus Coulter (pipe maintainance clinic), Luke Daniels (button accordeon), Tim Dowd (pipes) as well as pipers from the Armagh Pipers Club.

Musicians will be travelling from Ireland for the weekend so watch this space!

Hope to see you all at the end of the month. "

looks great, as far as I’m aware, the restriction on taking instruments as hand luggage on aircraft to Britain has been lifted.

Reminds me of a story from the 80’s, when Liam O Flynn flew into London, and was sprung upon with his large pipes case. ‘What’s in there? A bomb?’ screamed one of Londons finest. ‘No, worse’. Liam’s companion replied.

Was there a Dave Williams weekend last year (2006). Just realised there is nothing on the site, no pics or soundfiles/videos. Did it go ahead as planned. Can someone report if there was a gathering?

OK, found the 2006 videos, nice session and concert thanks

Hi Steampacket, Where did you find it ? I just found the 2005 weekend pics & vids.

Patrick

Don’t tell anyone else Thomas, God knows they might enjoy it.. ;p

WHERE ARE THEY DAMNIT!?

On the Kerry whistles site: http://www.kerrywhistles.com

You click on Cinema and then you must register. This gives you access to the long movies (Celtic). There’s a 2006 concert with some fine piping from Paddy Keenan, and then there’s a long 2006 session movie.

kissy kissy!

The concert is from 05.

There was plenty of tuition in many instruments and loads of tunes and non-musical entertainment too (a typical thing at Tom Kings good house).

P-P-P-Pipers in the session film include

Tim Dowd
Gael Rukowtski
Myself
Andrew Toboner (sp?)
Theresa ??

And I’m sure there were more (hazy memory). That night vision makes it look like it was filmed by ‘Buffalo Bill’ shudder

It was a great event. It may have been slightly low key on the ‘celebrity’ side of things concerning concerts and such, but it was attended by people from all over the place and as usual some people took a while to leave after the event…

Thanks for the info Alan. I thought the concert was from last year. I liked the Paddy Keenan part of the concert, his Quinn chanter sounded very good. The sound of the guitar was irritating, and also the lady playing whistle earlier in the concert, especially when she played on the “Bucks”, but I guess it was a straight up and down filming of the concert without sophisticated sound mixing etc. A document of the event nonetheless.

Good to see you in the session, is that a O’Briain set you were playing, sounded nice. Who was the lady sitting with a full set who didn’t seem to play?

Glad to help.

The ‘lady whistler’ in the concert was Grace Kelly (She’s sister to John Joe Kelly).

Indeed, that’s my O’Briain set I was playing. The lady piper if I remember rightly was called Theresa, but don’t trust me on that, as I stated, my memory is hazy of the event…

Is anything planned for the current year?
