Dave Williams D staples

I’m wondering if anyone KNOWS (actually knows - not a guess or “it worked for me”) what dimensions the late & beloved pipemaker, Dave Williams used for his D chanter staples. My reed is going bad and I do not want to take it apart and unroll the staple to find out - which would ruin it for ever.

I want to try to match his reed design but do not have the info…I guess I should have asked him long ago.

I’ve been using the trial and error method and don’t think any are correct.

Thanks

If the reed is truly going bad and not just in need of a bridle adjustment or something, you could just make a new reed head for that staple. No need to destroy the staple. Take note of things such as depth of staple insert into the head and whether or not the head has tone chambers carved out. Of course, if you want to make extra staples then the Hartd site is a good place to start.
