You get a free account and then you can upgrade for more space and features if you wish. So far, I’m just doing the free account.
What this allows you to do is to create a little personal-organization web page. You can post lists, notes, text, and other things. What I find useful is that I made a page that includes a very easy to edit to-do list and my favorite weblinks. You also get a free email address which can be used to email information to the page. It’s cool. I made this the default page for my browser. Very handy. It’s a new program that’s getting a lot of attention and I think the uses for it will expand rapidly.
Dale, could you post your thoughts on it after using it for a few days? I’ve thought about trying it out, but haven’t talked to anyone who actually used it.
I’ve been using it a week now. There are a couple of bugs in some of the more advanced features, but all-in-all, it’s the best “get-organized” thing I’ve run across for computers.
While in Vermont on June I took a short stroll along the AT - actually about 100 yards, ast was 1/2 mile up a steep hill to get to it, and I hadn’t mich time to spare. I admire anyone who can do this hike - I’ve done a few 100~odd mile trails in the UK (North Downs, South Downs, Ridgeway, Wessex Ridgeway, Cotswold Way), but generally NOT carrying all my camping gear too, and in the UK there are plenty of villages with nice shops, pubs, and beds-and-breakfasts along the way.
I’ve been thinking hard about setting up a website for selling my UP reeds, but I don’t know the first thing about it… ie what I would need, who to contact… etc…etc. Do you suppose this service would be a good alternative?
Joseph, there are several free web hosting services. These have pop up ads when people visit your site. However, if you want to get your feet wet, it is a viable option. Angelfire and Geocities are two with free options. If you get into it, you can upgrade later to a paid site without ads and/or register your own domain name.
If you have MS Word or MS Office, saving HTML (web based files) is not that much different from saving DOC (MS Word files). Geocities also has a Page Builder with simple templates that would be more than adequate for information pages with prices. If people want to order that can be done via email.
A lot of people think setting up a webpage is black magic. However, I produced the content for, and taught, a class for doing your own basic site. At the end of the two-hour class, everyone there had their own site up and running on Geocities.
