crystal flute embouchure question

Hi,

I just noticed that my Hall flute’s ‘roled’ embouchure hole (& tone holes), well, the role is uneven. If you look across the holes, not into them, the role looks sort of like wavy melted glass. Mabe this is why it’s so difficult to get a sound out of it. I’ve heard you can use nail polish to build up the away edge of the embouchure hole, then sand it sharp to improve attack, but wondered if I should ‘fix’ the uneven spots to make it easier to blow.

Any thoughts?

Thanks! Candi

Well, I have a thought not on tweaking, but on blowing into the thing.

On most flutes, you want the edge of the mouth-side of the embouchure hole to rest on or near the middle of your bottom lip. The Hall Crystal flutes are different this way. Your bottom lip should rest BEHIND the glass ridge of the hole. I don’t know how this thing works, but it does.

Ah-HA! Thanks! Not related to this thread but that just explained why something was happening. Now I just have to remember that until I get home to try and see if that was causing my ‘problem’. I knew there was a reason I wanted to bring my flute to work today…

Cheers,
Tony

It worked! The flute had a big dip on the far left of the role of the enbrouchure hole & a smaller one in the middle. I carefully built it up with clear nail polish (takes a steady hand) while being very cautious about dripping any inside the hole. I used enough to be able to file it down to match the rest of the role with an emery board. If anyone’s having trouble with their Hall flute, check it out. Hold it horizontally with the holes up & look across them. Bet you may be surprised. It’s still going to take a while given the different lip placement, but it’s sooo easier to blow.
