Seems like a good idea to start a new thread about this year’s Cruinniú na bhFliúit. I was planning to make this announcement:
We’re happy to announce that the 2010 Flute meeting is open for business. It’ll take place from the 7th-10th April in Baile Bhuirne, Co Cork. This is our third biennial event, and follows the same basic format, with classes lectures seminars, a public interview, concert, and of course, sessions. Teachers lined up for this year are Catherine McEvoy, Tara Bingham, Conal Ó Gráda, and Hammy Hamilton.
Lecturers Aoife Granville and Fintan Vallely, performance workshop with John Blake and Harry Bradley, and Roscommon flute player Patsy Hanley is the subject of the interview.

Places can be booked by mailing flutemeet@gmail.com, and cost for classes and all events is €150, booking deposit €50.

Hello Folks,
As we get the content of the activities outside of the classes fleshed out I thought it might be helpful to post the details of each event as they come to us.
On Thursday April 8th, we have Aoife Granville presenting a lecture on ‘The Fife Tradition of Munster’. This follows on from Gary Hastings presentation on the Ulster Fife Tradition at the Cruinniú in 2008.
Aoife is a top notch flute player (see her CD The Sráid Eoin Shuffle), fiddle player and singer and is a member of the Sráid Eoin Fife Band in Dingle. She has recently completed a PhD on this topic, researching a tradition that has died out in many areas of Munster (but making a comeback!). Over the weekend, Aoife will also whip the flute tutors into a fife band for a performance on the Saturday night
The lectures all facilitate audience input and questions and have proved very informative and enjoyable events in the past.

Continuing with detailed updates on the Cruinnu program:
One of the most exciting features of Cruinniu 2010 will be the attendance of Patsy Hanly.
Patsy is one of the living giants of traditional flute playing. Born in Roscommon, he was at the heart of one of the strongest flute-playing traditions in the country and rubbed shoulders with many of the legendary names such as Josie McDermott & John Joe Gardiner to name but two. For reasons unknown, Patsy has never recorded a solo CD so this will be a rare opportunity to get up close to his playing.
I will be doing a ‘public interview’ with Patsy on the Friday evening of the Cruinniu. This will be in front of an audience made up of the students and tutors. Patsy is a notoriously humorous man so I haven’t a clue what he will come out with. The aim will be to allow the audience a window in to Patsy’s musical heritage and flute-playing life and I’m sure it will be illustrated with tunes, anecdotes, audience input and loud guffaws.
Patsy will also tour around the classes, participate in the sessions and will feature in the Saturday night concert.
Personally, this is the aspect of the Cruinniu that I am most looking forward to. Patsy is a living legend and we are delighted to be able to have him down this year.

Hammy & myself have made a change to this years program to incorporate what we have called a ‘Flute-players Clinic’. This is basically a fancy term for accomodating 1:1 time between the teachers and the attendees. This will be outside the regular class hours and will allow students to get some private time with the teachers to address any aspect of their playing that they or the teacher deems relevent e.g. tone, rhythm, phrasing, breathing, posture, holding the flute, instrument choice etc. etc. We feel this will be a hugely satisfying feature for the attendees and will build on the relationships already established during the classes. It is hoped that this, along with the rest of the program, will allow students to take home feedback of real value to their own development as flute-players.
If any of you have other suggestions as to how we can add value to the learning experience please let us know.
Bookings for the event are healthy and we expect a full house by the time the event comes around. We are also excited to have heard from a number of top players who intend to come down just for the craic…should make for a great atmosphere and some mighty music for all concerned.

I can´t tell you guys how much I´m looking forward to come over again! And if there´s any way to improve the absolutely fab weekend you all held two years ago it has to be the Flute-Players-Clinic idea!

Hammy will include a presentation on Basic Flute Maintenance in his classes and will be available all through the weekend to address peoples particular concerns in that area. Glad you like the Flute-Players Clinic idea Dagmar. Hopefully it will give people something extra.
We have got the title of Fintan Vallelys lecture. It is called ‘The Gibbet, The Gentleman and the Jig’…could only have come from Fintan! I believe its about the development of flute cultures in Ireland. I’m sure it will be both highly educational as well as highly amusing… in true Fintan style.
We have a great twist planned for the concert on Saturday night…its a secret but make sure you bring your cameras!
This really does sound like an awesome event to attend - I wish I could come!
Too bad I just can’t make it… no matter what. I’ll have to come to Ireland in the summer instead.

Because of some preplanned vacation plans, I cannot come to Cork before 8th of April (around 6pm). Will I miss much of the meeting? I have not decided whether I will come or not, but I wanted to hear your thoughts on this. Especially I do not want to miss the one-to-one tutoring.

In fact a few people are asking this same question. If you got here on Thursday you’d still get most of the classes and events, including the one to one. We’re going to have a meeting very shortly to discuss this issue of people who want to attend for less than the full three days, so we’ll post here shortly about it.
