I know this sort of issue is covered in various threads
but I would like to make this a central repository
for information about obtaining G# on different makes of D key flute.
Firstly I would like someone to comment on a Seery Blackwood
because that is what I play.
However the topic is not limited to this.
Anything goes.
At the moment I am playing about with refining
XX% XOO
(ie % = half holing )
This is half holing with cross fingering.
As I said, anything goes
AS LONG AS IT IS BASED ON YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE.
On my Casey Burns XXO XXX in the first octave,and XXO XOO in the second octave,bending it down a little.
Since the second octave one is a little sharp,you might think putting more fingers down below would flatten it,but I’ve tried that and it just does strange overtone things,even XXO XOX.
This is interesting.I went home yesterday and was playing my flute,and thought I’d try some G#s. XXO XOX now works fine in the second octave! I’m sure I tried it before and it didn’t work. Could that be because the flute wasn’t broken in then? Anyway,I’m happy.

When I first tried that cross fingering XXO XOX, I couldn’t get it to work well either…later that day, it worked great. I think you just adjusted to get the tone right.
Mmm,yeah,could be.It doesn’t feel like I’m doing anything different,but maybe.It was right after I got the flute that it didn’t work,having only played silver flute before that.So you’re probably right.It’s me,not the flute.As usual.

And my own XX% XOO not reliable at anything but slow tempo and still iffy at times.
(Now theres a good name - “Iffy”)
Does this mean I have to send the flute to Desi for a G# key?

Are you sure those cross-fingerings don’t work if you roll the embouchure in and reduce your breath?
In a bit of synchronicity, I was playing around with cross-fingerings earlier today as I (still) debate what keys to have Desi add to my flute.
I could also get a lower octave Bb with XOX XXX (or was it XOX XOX) as well as Fnat in the lower octave with XXX XOX and a big roll in of the embouchure and a drop off in airflow…but it was right on pitch. For some reason it didn’t work in the upper octave which I find odd.
With all the cross fingerings out there, I’m tempted to just get a D#/Eb key.
I have a Casey Burns (the beginer model) and XXOXXX works decently in the lower octave, while XXOXOX works very nicely in the second. I find half holing pretty hard on the Casey Burns for almost all notes.

Well you walk into the topic with a halfhole in your hand and ask everyone else, “why you got your heads in the sand?” And everyone just looks at you with their fingers all crossed they say, “look at the topic title, Mr Stone …”
And you look at the title its about some sorta hash and you yell, “hey I dont care how G it is but I don’t go for that stuff I’m clean”. The head tala he comes to you saying, “you don’t know what I mean, do you Mr Stone?”
