CPVC Pipe Clarinet Mouthpiece

Amazing how people pass the time of day, isn’t it.

The Edit: On my system, the drawing is much clearer if you print it out.

For anyone interested in duplicating the clairinet mouthpiece, you can actually buy a clairinet (or sax) clamp for a couple of dollars at a music store instead of using the hose clamp. Another note, you can buy a clairinet or sax mouthpiece for under $10.00 Canadian to put on your own whistle design, though that I suppose would take all the fun out of it!

I myself was given a wooden instrument similar to the one on the page the person had a saxaphone reed tied down with an elastic band on a bamboo whistle like body. It sounded awful! But my Mom thought it was wonderful so I had to keep it. I think I like my sax better, but what do I know!

To all those adventurous builders, have fun and good luck and keep my Mom away from the finished product!!!

It’s funny you should post this. I was investigating bombards a while ago. They’re fingered the same as whistles but have some drawbacks – namely the volume and air requirements. But it got me to thinking about putting a single reed mouthpiece onto a whistle body. I mentioned the idea to a friend of mine who is both a saxophonist and a whistle player and he scoffed mightily. But I’m going to have to see if I can find a cheap clarinet mouthpiece and experiment…

If you open the drawing as a seperate image on its own page, it’s clearer too - they put it in the html as a smaller size than it really is.

Actually a real clarinet mouthpiece and clamp can be had for about $15 US. ($45,786.02 Canadian.) It fits nicely into a standard piece of PVC. I made a keyless Chalumeaux that way.

I’m the one who built the CPVC clarinet and mouthpiece.

I know you can buy an ordinary clarinet mouthpiece for $10-$15 (including reed).
An ordinary clarinet mouthpiece will couple with a 3/4" CPVC coupler very nicely. Sometimes you have to sand the couple inside just a tiny bit.

I wanted to learn how to build the clarinet mouthpiece and all the little idiosyncracies of it. By doing so, I learned more about the mouthpiece to go from the CPVC design to this:

It’s a handmade mouthpiece with commercial ligature used on it.

Daniel,

That is a beautiful instrument! Are you selling them? I’d be interested. Send me a PM.
