They’re here! Black Diamond Whistles…the newest whistle line from master whistlesmith Erle Bartlett of Austrailia.
Several years ago Erle exploded on the Irish whistle scene with his remarkable Syn Whistle. Now he has created the next generation of Bartlett innovation.
The Black Diamond is a sleek, responsive whistle with good volume and just the right amount of chiff to create a complex and wonderful traditional tone. The back pressure is perfect…not so much as to be a hard player, but just enough so that the whistle can really be pushed without jumping octaves or getting out of control. Air requirements are moderate to low. It is a wonderful instrument and sure to rise in popularity.
Man, those look a LOT like Gary Humphrey’s excellent Delrin headed whistles which Paul finally got to play at the NE Chiff and Fipple gathering.
He also played several Syns and was very impressed.
One thing I never understand is why makers don’t get somebody to provide a sound sample who can play a little more in the style that interests people likely to want a whistle like this. It’s impossible to get an idea of the whistle’s responsiveness, etc. otherwise.
