CP: moving along.

Hi all!

After closing my book for a few years, the waiting time is down from 3 years to 3 months.

This is a great relief to me. Whistle-making never stopped for me in all that time.

However, I had to close again for African Blackwood or cocobolo. Only gidgee is in promise-able supply.

There is another material that seems available for a while - that is Delrin (acetal resin)

Acetal has close approximation to blackwood - it produces a very powerful whistle with a good range of timbral complexity.

It is not blackwood - acetal is its own thing.

I am told that acetal is “Guinness-proof”. It was developed as an industrial bearing material for caustic environments.

I work it just as I would work a piece of wood - same processes.
However, acetal tends to burr and is very difficult to get a final-finish on.

It does not need oiling and little swabbing.

I will be using a lot more of it while blackwood seems to be getting hard to find.

I have an example on my website - it is a very robust and energetic player- not a shy thing.
If you want something like that - take it.

Just follow the form.

I’ll probably be putting more of these up - so no rush.

OZ goes plastic @ytliek

I like my delrin Abell much better than my old blackwood one–and I liked the blackwood one a lot.
No shame in using that material.

Way ahead of you Lempriere… already have them all. Beautiful sounding instruments all of them.

Cocobolo C, D, Eb

I have delrin and plastic whistles but I prefer wood. Delrin is tough and can withstand rough handling. There are plenty of other woods available besides blackwood and cocobolo wood each offering their own particular sound. And thank you Mitch!
