Just received Chris Norman (flute) and David Greenberg (fiddle) newly released duo CD ‘Let Me In This Ae Night’ and I’m entranced. They’re at the top of their field in folk and art music and their experience of various genres has produced an album which is difficult to “pigeon-hole” as being of one style or period.
It is easy to forget that there are only two musicians on this recording. Both players easily alter the character of their instruments via tone and attack, etc., but there are times when each player is playing more than one note. Their virtuosity means that they switch the tune from lower to upper register with ease, with the tune sometimes being segmented throughout the ranges of the instruments, thus contributing to the illusion of “ensemble” rather than duo.
The unison passages are synchronised and the duets are sympathetic in arrangement and performance, with both players fading in and out of the foreground as they take turns in being accompanist. The counter-points are as exciting as the tunes.
Overall an empathetic and colourful interpretation of folk and art music.

Chris mentioned it at his concert in Pittsburgh a couple of months ago as well. He did this concert with the same guy, David Greenburg, and it was AWEsome!
I have a 1970 LP set of a Benny Goodman concert in Stockholm. His drummer plays a Turkish march by Mozart on a pencil using the same technique. The track is appropriately named “Venus HB” which is the type of drawing pencil he’s using. It’s amazing.
