(1) Fair Hill of Killen - I learned this one from the David Power performance footage up on the Salt Lake Piping Club website. It’s got to be one of the most beautiful airs I’ve heard in ages.
(2) Boys of Bluehill - This is my attempt at the Ennis version of this tune, which is deftly notated in John Walsh’s Book of Pipe-Friendly Tunes.
I burned some vacation days this week and have been drowning myself in a veritable orgy of pipes and video games. So what if I have 250,000 unread e-mails when I get back into the office? It’s been worth it just for the luxury of being able to practice for several hours each day. On my normal schedule, I usually have to sneak in 30 min. or so after work before my wife gets home. Life is good.
His version sounds like it’s a lament for the passing of a chieftain who died in battle, as opposed to mine which sounds vaguely like it’s memorializing a pet hamster who died from a particularly severe case of animal heartburn.
Granted, having a Fremont C set doesn’t hurt, though I really shouldn’t put myself through the psychic pain of daydreaming about my first flat set when I don’t even have drones or regs on my D practice set at this point. Instrument lust is a cancer I tell you.
