County Secedes

VINITA, OKLA. (WPI) - In a move unprecedented since the 1860’s, a Northeast Oklahoma County has chosen to secede from the Union.

Citing irreconcilable differences, county commissioners in Craig County unanimously agreed that, due to a lack of interest, by the State of Oklahoma, in the arts, and in particular a lack of subsidies for the Irish tinwhistle community, they would no longer accept funds for the alleged maintenance of county roads, and would henceforth be known as the Independent Republic of Craig County, Oklahoma.

Presidential elections are scheduled for Tuesday, May 18th, but it is expected that longtime mayor of Big Cabin, Billy Mack Wadkins will be the unrivaled winner.

Oklahoma Governor Brad Henry (D) issued a statement, earlier today, which, in effect said, “We are glad to get rid of Craig County, it was just costing us money, anyway.”

Craig County has been in a severe recession since the closure of its major industry, Eastern State Hospital, or as locals referred to it, “The Loony Bin.”

The disgruntled Grand River Dam Authority, which is headquartered in Craig County, and is a major utility provider in the region has vowed to protest the secession.

Meanwhile, the county has ordered a plaque from the Vinita Trophy Company, to declare and solidify sovereignty.

I had heard there was a petition going around for them to leave Oklahoma and join Kansas. Well, so much for the rumor mill! :boggle:

Oklahoma is a funny state. During my last year in the Boy Scouts, I lived in Vernon, TX. We had a campground right on the Red River, and we used to sneak across the river into Oklahoma, but the Border Patrol never caught us.

I remember well a few years ago when they emptied the state hospital up in Wichita Falls and shipped the residents over the border to Lawton, OK. I hear it improved the average IQ in both states… <G,D, and RLH>

Reminds me of a local thing–The city of Annapolis has a section just across the Spa Creek bridge called Eastport. Eastport has always felt like downtown Annapolis’ neglected stepchild, and a few years ago it (facetiously) declared its independence…now know as the Maritime Republic of Eastport.
