I have just had my D chanter re-reeded and my Cnat now has a constipated sound. Everything else is fine and sounds well. This is not a keyed C, its by the fingers. Any advice, or has this been coverd in a previous thread?
Thanks,
Liam

Can you elucidate further on exactly how the tone is different from the other notes in your scale? Is it still in tune, just the timbre is different?? Is it quieter? Do any other alternative fingering work? BTW which fingering are you using for your Cnat??
B~
Brian, the Cnat is much quieter than rest of the scale, as far as tuning, I would say slightly flat. I suppose you could say that the chanter is quite loud and bright and when I move to c its a bit quiet and sick.
As far as fingering goes, I have off my B, F & 1 E finger (3 fingers.
Cheers,
Liam
Try OXXOVOX
where the V is the finger to give vibrato.
The chanter should be LIFTED OFF THE KNEE for this fingering, with the left index finger uncurling gradually to leave the top hole 3/4 open approx…gives a nice bend from a slightly flat to a slightly sharp Cnat…a favoured effect of many pipers.
Robbie Hannan uses this fingering all the time…
It is louder, clearer, and will take more pressure than some other ways of getting Cnat

Did you have the chanter ‘fitted’ for the reed by the reedmaker? or did you just buy a new reed and plug it in?
Is the person who made the reed aware of this problem? if so, what were their comments?
How did Cnat sound with the old reed?
Are there any dimensional changes or style differences from the old reed to new reed?

How did you get on with your C nat problem?

Thanks for your replies, regarding the fingering a freind of mine recomended something similar as used by Pat Mitchell which he picked up at Willie Clancy week. I’m starting to get a better sound as it is anyway. It is an old Geoff Wooff chanter, number six off the line and I had it reeded by Geoff. I’m over in Perth Australia so perhaps it just needs a bit more playing in. Going back to previous threads about moisture, I noticed the reed started to jump around a bit more when I was sitting under my aircon vent, which is an evaporative system.
As far as reed dimensions go, yes its quite different. Its quite funney because previusly it was “G” giving me grief. But because it is one of his first chanters I’m not loosing to much sleep. I’m just trying to get the best possible sound out of it.
I must say sorry for not replying earlier, but I have been away for a few days.
{edited due to my piss poor enhlish!}
Cheers,
Liam
