Confused by a Chromatic Tuner

Hi Guys, please enlighten me.

I have bought a Chromatic tuner because I am making my own PVC whistle. and I was surprised when I blow my Susato C on the lowest note and the tuner gave a C5. When I hit the A it gave an A5.

I consulted the keyboard and the tuning fork and hit the middle C (C4) and the tuner gave a C4 +5 var.

Now I was wondering if the tuner I bought was correct or not.

The Soprano instrument on voice is approximately C4-C6, so I was expecting the C whistle to have C4 on the lowest note. Even on notations the lowest note (of C major whistle) is C4

However when I changed the Keyboard to Flute, the same middle C button went to C5.

Am I going bananas? or the Woodwind keys is usually 1 octave higher than what is noted.

C4 (Keyboard)= C5 (woodwind)
The timber of they keys from flute/whistle to piano kinda confused my brain, but somehow the whistle is light making me think that the tuner is right.

Give me some monkeys and help me on these bananas. :boggle:

piano middle C (C4) is low C on an 8 keyed flute (or the Boehm)
whistles are an octave higher (or XXX XXX on a standard D whistle would be D5)

I’m guessing that your C whistle is the C one step below normal D whistle (or C5)

so… I’ve no idea why someone did that to the piano

third one down is a free tuner http://www1.ocn.ne.jp/~tuner/tuner_e.html
works fine

Thanks for the Idea.

Now the bananas are gone

Denny,

I think it’s because you can play more notes on whistles than you can on a piano so they had to do something to make up the difference. If you start from low, low A (which is the lowest whistle key I’m aware of) and play only the first octave whole notes on enough whistles to take you through high G (the highest I’m aware of) you would use 14 whistles time 7 notes an octave for a total of 98 notes. Since a piano has only 88 notes it is just too limiting. Now if they would have chosen a clarinet to standardize around instead of a piano it would have made all the difference.

Or they could have made longer piano keyboards I guess.

ecohawk

might be countin’ many of the notes more that once… they overlap a lot
low A would be A3
high G would be G5, two octaves to G7, (or three octaves to G8, good luck with that)

piano: 88 keys, 7 octaves + a minor 3rd

C4 is C4 no matter what type of instrument you’re playing. It has a frequency of about 262 Hz.

Technically, soprano whistles are transposing instruments, because they sound an octave higher than written. Sheet music for a C whistle would range from about C4 - C6, but the actual sound you hear would be C5 - C7. So your tuner is correct.

A low C whistle would sound as written.

Could it be that the tuner is hearing the harmonics louder than the fundamental?

and they said whistles weren’t rocket science… I dunno… sounds like splittin’ atoms to this newbie… whew!

we all spit atoms :really:

and here I was tryin’ to be funny.

Now I’m spittin’ atoms…though I used to split atoms

Although harmonics do tend to mess with tuners a bit. That’s why mine is getting rusty. I put it away and just decided to practice my breath control. Works a lot better.

ecohawk

ya, but ya didn’t spit split atoms, eh!

What plaidpotato said.

An open organ pipe – actually a giant tin whistle – 8 feet long produces a pitch 2 octaves below middle C. Halving the length moves the pitch up an octave. A middle C organ pipe is about 2 feet long, and our common whistles, just a bit shorter than a foot for D, start in the next octave above that.

Now this is bad. :frowning:

I am reading a C4 and playing a C5 is a major reprogramming.Though it is not that big deal for many as both are key of C, but my brain is now unsatisfied.

I need to reprogram my brain again.

I am continually practicing perfect pitch/absolute pitch recognition,
and the subtle difference is very important according to the training.

Ever since I started the training it made me paranoid/nuts as if I am on drugs.

I can hear the very breath of the person, the key of the shoe when walking and key of the birds chirping, and lot’s of irrelevant keys that you can hear. Most often than not I cant sleep because I listen even to a slightest movement.

Believe it or not, I easily located the movement of cockroach on the floor, with the lights off.
Thus making it easy to assassinate it.

In this training, although it is not exercised, I developed a skill that you can distinguish the inconsistencies of the speaking voice. Merely just by listening to the voice, you can tell if the person is sick, lying or hiding a secret, pretending, and different emotions.

Now how will I convince my brain that this is C5 and the notated is C4.

My mind is on a debate right now. :astonished:

Heaven help you if you want to play the alto flute, or Bb clarinet.

:frowning:  :astonished:

is that the same with Piccolo and Flute? all are written lower on the actual sound?

Who invented the writing thing? If i can turn back the time, I will slap his/her face…lol

it can get ugly aways off the staff

Who invented that notation? I guess, he/she really love grapes… I will use apples instead of grapes on the staff.

Ledger lines really is hard to read, I guess.
