Comparison: Old & New Flutes on Bach

This is from a project I’m working on, and I thought you might find these two recordings to make an interesting comparison.

This is the Siciliano from J.S. Bach’s E-major flute Sonata, played on two very different simple-system flutes, my 6-key Hamilton, and my old 8-key German flute.

There have been many interesting discussions on why the old flutes were tuned the way they were. I think you may find these recordings illuminating: listen to the intervals on the German flute verses the modern Irish flute when playing in E-major and C-sharp minor.

Here are the recordings:

on the Hamilton
on the German 8-key

All thoughts and comments welcome.

Hey cool.

I can’t say I hear that much difference between them.

I found a link for you.

You wouldn’t happen to have that sonata in PDF form by any chance?

Hi James

How about a longer clip on the 8 key German - I preferred the fatter tone it had compared the the purer tone of the Hammy.

David

Sure! More Bach, you mean, or is there anything in particular you’d like…?

–James

More Bach would be lovely James.

Just so happens, thanks to the IMSLPcollection, I do!

Sonata No. 6

–James

Well, this is a work in progress, parts of it aren’t exactly polished yet…

Here’s the Adagiofrom the same Sonata in E Major.

I’ll record more of it for you next week. Bach gives my wife a headache!

–James

Thanks James

I enjoyed that, it took my mind off the spreadsheet detailing what my instruments have cost me :boggle:
